I haven't seen any films on consistent basis for past 3 years. Long story. The only one I've seen recently is Girl With A Pearl Earring, and that was worth going out of my way for, even if I had to force myself.

I had to take a minute to try and figure out if you were serious or not there. People who get hung up on whether a film is color or black and white just confuse me to no end. Why does it matter? Neglecting more than half a century of film entertainment solely because it's not in color just doesn't make sense.

Besides, B&W filmmaking offers a hugely different atmosphere in a film than color does. Without color at their disposal, directors were forced to be extremely creative with lighting and framing to convey the mood they're trying for. And on top of that, there are no big-budget special effects to distract audiences, so older films have to rely on actual well-written stories and well-developed characters to keep the audience entertained. You wouldn't think that would seem so bad to Adventure fans, would you?

Really? Well, I haven't read the book. At least the acting was good. 8-)

Another good black and white film that I've seen lately is Julius Caesar -- also has very good acting.

Except that a lot of them weren't that creative, so it didn't really work out for them. I think there's probably just as much creativity in movies today as there was then. Special effects and stuff may help bad writers and directors get away with their lack of talent more than in the beginning. But you can still tell the difference between a film maker relying on special effects and one that actually knows what he/she is doing. When used properly special effects can really enhance the story. So they're not a distraction at all. Ideally you shouldn't even notice that the effects are there. Look at The Matrix. It had one of the best stories in recent memory and was loaded with special effects.

1. Black and White films are tools of the Devil.
2. Deadworm, where's other ?
3. http://imdb.com/title/tt0033729/

EDIT: What about films that are in color for half of the film and are in B&W for the other half ?
Case in point...

http://imdb.com/title/tt0120789/ (Crap) and

http://imdb.com/title/tt0116141/ (Too mushy for me)

There may be better examples out there...

Default The Third Man

The third Man pretty much defines the detective mystery thriller (wow, what a genre). If you haven't seen it, well, go see it. But ofcourse now it's a pretty cliché story but the fun the director had with the shadow and light is unbelievable!

Yes, it was a nice emphasizing effect. Also, the end of the film with the elderly people was in color if I'm not mistaken, but it was more of an homage than part of the actual film.

(Oh, and for the record, I didn't mean this was a lame poll per se, just that it's kind of funny how everytime a view etc is challenged in a thread, instantly a poll appears here. )

Psycho is one of the few black and white films I can still stand watching.

This is one of my all time favourite movies.

I get a shot of black and white movies all the time... I can feel it right there, as the text rolls through the screen... "this black and white screen only appears in the movie's version for screening purposes" or something like that...

One of my favourite films as a kid was a black & white pirate film with Errol Flynn... can't remember what it was called though.

Hitchcock is always good, and the Bogart films I've seen are brilliant...

Of course I watch black & white movies. They're no less good because they're a little colourless.

I can't understand why somebody would prejudge a film for the number of colors in it...

I saw 8 1/2 yesterday. That was some of the most amazing photography I'd seen in a movie.
