What is this painting?

I just saw a portrait of a man on television, that I found instantly recognisable, but it's driving me crazy because I can't recall any of the details about the painting.

I managed to find a clip on YouTube, and capture a couple of grainy shots of it.

If anyone can fill the gap in my memory and tell me what I'm looking at, I will love you forever.

Now I'm wondering, cause I know this. Check on Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Velazquez.

That's "The Laughing Cavalier" by Frans Hals, a famous dutch painter. It hangs over the television in my parents house (not the original though :P ).

Thanks!

I knew one of the many cultured people around here would be able to help. :D

No problem, anything for your love. ;)

The good news is you don't have to track down Henke to see it either.

It's part of the Walllace Collection in London (I'm pretty sure it's the original. There was no TV underneath it when I went. :D)

Hey..... I have culture; I knew about the painting, I was just waiting on someone else to tell you.

I'm Dutch; for me it was so obvious that I didn't think about it. I see paintings like that everywhere. On the streets, at work, in my windmill, hell, we even have tulips with the Nachtwacht on their petals!

You're correct, the original is in London. My grandmother bought our copy when she went there a loooooong time ago. :P

I think you've been hit on the head by a windmill, that's what I think. ;)

No, I was kicked by someone with wooden shoes on ;)

Henke 08-11-2007 01:01 PM

I was kicked by someone with swedish clogs on. I wonder if the dutch ones hurt more. This is something that should be thoroughly tested. :P

tsa 08-11-2007 01:10 PM

OK, how about I kick you with my local footware, and afterwards you kick me with yours? :)

Sounds great, we should make a tradition out of it.
