Chocolat (2000)
Edward Scissorhands (1990)
Fifth Element, The (1997)
Little Princess, A (1995)
Nightmare Before Christmas, The (1993)
O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)
Secret Garden, The (1993)
Vita è bella, La (1997)
What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993)

There are much more I would recommend, but these are most of the less-than-R rated movies I had under "Favourites" at IMDB.

Hm... well, it's brand new, but School of Rock is cool. Although I imagine it's probably not as much fun if you don't like Tenacious D.

As for some older films, what everyone else said, plus...

Casablanca
The Big Sleep
The Maltese Falcon (only saw like 30 mins of that but it seemed very good)
As good as it gets
Les Visiteurs
Groundhog Day
Back to the Future trilogy
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
The gods must be crazy (both 1 & 2)
Ocean's Eleven

Wow. Some of you have great taste.

Except you, Trep. You're crazy.

Well, if there is one thing that all parents will heartily allow ... it is Musicals. Yes siree Bob.

My Fair Lady. (G)

Hello Dolly (G)

Newsies (PG)

Swing Kids (PG)

I know there are better musicals out there, but these have themes that I can identify with.

I would also recommend...

The Goonies (PG)

Back to the Future (PG)

Remains of the Day (PG)

Man who would be King (PG)

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (PG)

The Party (PG)

Casino Royale (PG)

Sellers is a favourite actor of mine.

That is all.

The Party... I can't believe I forgot that one! It's hilarious!

Another good Sellers film is "Being There"... and also "Dr Strangelove, or how I learned to stop worrying and love the bomb".

Dear god, you have no taste whatsoever. Except for Fifth Element and O Brother, Where Art Thou? none of those movies have any story.

Wow, thanks a lot guys. In all honesty I didn't actually expect that many people to respond.

Kingz, I may just see if I can convince them to let me see some R movies. Lost in Translation comes out here March 11, so I'll probably give it a shot early March and see what happens. I just remembered I'll probably have an earlier opportunity to work on it. The Passion of the Christ is rated R and there is no way that they are going to stop me from see it.

Remixor, Amadeus certainly looks interesting. I find it hilarious that the original is rated PG and the director's cut is rated R. What's up with that? I mean they only added 20 more minutes.

Erkki, I've been meaning to see The Fifth Element for a while now. Hmmm... I think I know someone who has it that I can borrow it from. I would also really like to see Edward Scissorhands and The Nightmare Before Christmas. Would you believe that the only Tim Burton movie that I have seen is Planet of the Apes (which I hear is his worst)? O Brother, Where Art Thou? is one of my favorites.

Ninja, a lot of noir. I feel bad that I haven't seen them yet. I'm sure that I would like Grim even more afterwards.

Thanks all.

I discovered that Sleepy Hollow is rated R as well, but you should try to see Nightmare Before Christmas and Edward Scissorhands.

I have a hard time coming up with non-R movies atm, but I remembered these three at least

raise the red lantern
happy times
strangers on a train

Almost couldn't agree more, well I'll add something...

Tim Burton+Johnny Depp+Danny Elfman = perfection

Ha, ha, my father saw Pirates of the Caribean and he hated it! I think he hates all movies made after the 80's!
Kung Pow, I understand, Roger Rabbit, ok, whatever, but...
he doesn't even like LOTR!

Oh, has anybody recommended Roger Rabbit yet?

I remember my parents controling the movies I watched.... I couldn't even watch Godzilla movies!

I haven't seen League or Galaxy Quest but I have to agree that the other ones are all great films... but, er, where is LOTR 3? I'm undecided whether I like it better than the first one, but it's certainly up there with the great ones!

If Erkki has no taste, then what about me? The guy who suggested Scooby Doo on Zombie Island?
(Good thing I didn't reccomend Attack of the Killer Tomatoes or Godzilla movies...)

I think there's a chance you might enjoy those:

Nightmare Before Christmas
Watch the trailer: http://disney.go.com/disneyvideos/an...are/about.html
http://www.movie-list.com/n/nightmar...hristmas.shtml

"Nightmare..." is basicly a musical with stop-motion animated puppets. It has the same level of artistic inspiration as Grim Fandango.

Donnie Darko
Watch the trailer:http://www.donniedarko.com/info/trailer.html
Trailer and movie clips: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/Donn...2/trailers.php

You might say it's a bit of a teen movie, a mind twister, a suspense, a psychological drama and a sci-fi about the theory of time travels and parrarel universe.

Not that "story" is the crucial factor in determining every movie's quality, of course. Story or not, I think The Fifth Element is a big load of steaming crap.

Musicals... No fouler thing has ever disgraced the silver screen so.
