Under-Appreciated Artwork
Anybody can design a fabulous piece of art to be the focal point of a garden or lobby, but what about the unsung heros of design...the industrial designers? Not only does their work have to look great, but it has to be durable and useful as well. If you know of some really great artwork that gets taken for granted because it's not "high art", post it or link to it in this thread.
I'll start: Casino Carpet. Exuberant and thematic, this stuff has to stand up to an immense amount of foot traffic and industrial strength cleanings yet remain vibrant and unfrayed for years. My hat is off to whoever designs this stuff. "Gallery 4" are the ones with which I'm personally familiar.

I like the Siena carpet.
I was perusing the IDEA (Industrial Design Excellence Awards) page and I saw the Cocoon. That's actually a fascinating design and not something that you would think about redesigning. |

I am of the belief that gardens are of themselves artwork, especially Japanese gardens. Gardens, just like any good artwork, begin with a picture in the creator's mind and then when implemented create themselves, sometimes with fantastic results. Where painter paint in hours, days, and weeks, a master gardener paints in decades.

It is nice and somewhat restrained, but the Siena is very dark inside and you hardly notice the carpet has a pattern at all.
Although the Peppermill carpets look garish by comparison, you have to see them in context to fully appreciate how well they match the overall decor...Check it out. To be completely honest, that is exactly what I wanted my bedroom to look like when I was a teenager. Erm, somebody better get the smelling salts in case Trep clicks on that link.

Nice site, Sage! I once stayed at the Cal-Neva in Reno, but didn't remember the carpet. Now it's all coming back to me!

Excellent, Davies!
We actually have a restaurant building here in Birmingham designed on that same plan...although I think it's currently home to a church congregation.
