http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmp...usic_guitar_dc

Lee (Ozzy Osbourne, Badlands) 50. Rudolf Schenker & Uli John Roth (Scorpions) 51. Oystein "Euronymous" Aarseth (Mayhem) 52. Scott Gorham & Brian Robertson (Thin Lizzy) 53. Steve Vai (Dave Lee Roth) 54. Reb Beach (Winger, Dokken) 55. Trey Azagthoth (Morbid Angel) 56. John Sykes (Thin Lizzy, Blue Murder) 57. Hank Shermann & Michael Denner (Mercyful Fate) 58. Glen Buxton & Michael Bruce (Alice Cooper) 70. Bjorn Gelotte & Jesper Stromblad (In Flames) 71. Jim Matheos (Fates Warning) 72. Gary Holt & Rick Hunolt (Exodus) 73. Donald Buck Dharma Roeser (Blue Oyster Cult) 74. Michael Amott (Arch Enemy) 75. Robert Fripp (King Crimson) 76. Andre Olbrich (Blind Guardian) 77. Joe Satriani 78. Frank Hannon & Tommy Skeoch (Tesla) 79. Ty Tabor (King's X) 80. Mark Morton & Will Adler (Lamb Of God) 81. Dino Cazares (Fear Factory) 82. Pete Townshend (The Who) 83. Jon Schaffer (Iced Earth) 84. Timo Tolkki (Stratovarius) 85. Neil Young 86. Abbath Doom Occulta (Immortal) 87. Kai Hansen (Gamma Ray) 88. Uffe Cederlund & Alex Hellid (Entombed) 89. Leigh Stephens (Blue Cheer) 90. Jim Martin (Faith No More) 91. Michael Romeo (Symphony X) 92. Bill Steer (Carcass) 93. Piggy (Voivod) 94. Tony Bourge (Budgie) 95. Sammy Hagar (Van Halen) 96. Alexi Laiho (Children Of Bodom) 97. Akira Takasaki (Loudness) 98. Michael Angelo 99. John Kay & Michael Monarh (Steppenwolf) 100. Nick Bowcott (Grim Reaper) I can't even begin to iterate what is wrong with this list. First of all, there are some names here...good guitarists, talented and all, but not what I would call metal. This is a big mistake. I see the obscurity involved in judging whether a Hard-Rock band like Guns 'n Roses should be considered as a metal band...but Queen ??? Hammett and Hetfield at number 2. Hmm...'Twould be wrong to say that they had no influence on the genre. I think they deserve a spot in the top 10. I don't know about No. 2, though. I've never liked AC/DC...so No. 3 is a bit too high. I don't think people regard them as Metal even. Nice to see good old (Late) Randy Rhoads recognised after all this time. He deserves the top spot. Eddie Van Halen at No.5. Hmm...I'm begining to realise the basis of this compilation. Old guitarists who have had an influence on the genre. I disagree with this spot though. He is a nice guitarist and all, but no. Page at 6. No, he deserves higher. Especially since their music was what coined the term heavy metal. Dimebag at No.7. Eck...here is where it gets bad. Zakk Wylde is NOT top 10 material. Sheeeesh. To think of all the names that could've been included instead of his makes my mind boggle. Kerry and Jeff at 10. Hmm....agreed. They did do some nice stuff. and you can recognise a Slayer riff when you hear it. Dave and Adrian at number 11 ??!!? Damn you guitar-world !! Damn you to hell. These guys are the very definition of innovative. And as for influential, I have never seen more Tribute bands and Covers of any other musician except possibly the Beatles as I have of Iron Maiden. They've been doing stuff since the late 1970s and have reinvented their music and sound as of the Brave New World album. These guys are musicians, they are composers. They deserve higher. Higher than any Zakk Wylde and Tool Guitarist Dammit. Bah! I'm too upset to continue my bashing of this list. However it is nice to see Jason Becker and Paul Gilbert on the list. They are relatively unknown, yet immensely talented. Good to see Mikael Åkerfeldt & Peter Lindgren recognised. WTF ?? Alex Skolnick at 61. That's a real shame. Sigh.

I don't have much to contribute. Jimmy Page and Brian May are my favorite guitarists on that list, but neither is particularly metal in the conventional definition of the word.

That's a bad list.
And guitarists can't be put on a Top 100 list. It's kind of stupid to say who's better than the other, when there's so much great guitarists in the world. And come on... Tolkki is higher than Michael Romeo, Romeo should be in Top 50 at least, if that list would be a real ranking

Jimmy Hendrix is excellent.
Anyway, since this, as you say, is more of a general guitar top 100... I vote K's Choice! |

I don't have time at the moment for a point by point of the list, but I have to make some clarifications as to what should be necessary to even be on the list.
a) You have to actually play guitar solos. If you can't do that, you aren't a guitarist. b) You have to know more scales than pentatonic. c) You need to know more than one key, and alternate tunings don't count. That eliminates the majority of the list. Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the show! Move along now!!! Nothing to see here... |

I must say, that list wasn't as bad as it could have been. The biggest complaint I have is why "Korn" and "System of a down" have their guitarists on 26 and 30 when they shouldn't even be allowed to be anywhere on that list. Of course Jimmy Page should have been much higher up. But other then that the list is pretty decent. I'm impressed.

NE rap-Metal deserves to be knocked off here. Hell, Hagar at 95??? BULLSHIT!!!! Try Top 30!! Lynch deserves to be higher, same with Warren DeMartini. Yngwie J. Malmsteen needs to be bumped up a few more spots, a near-Top 10 (11-12). Iommi deserves to be #1. Akira Takasaki at #97................at least SOMEBODY has heard of Loudness. They need to add Tracii Guns DAMNIT!!!! |

I think Pete Townshend could be higher up, I don't believe two guys from Korn would be better than him.

Don't get me wrong, I love Zeppelin, but Jimmy Page is often criticised for just beating his guitar and hoping something that sounded good would happen.
