OK, I watched enough to see the small montage of the songs (and every now and then before a bit more of the songs too (I wanted to see the Apocalyptica performance, but it ended up being in the end, so I saw more than I would've thought of the performances)). And all I can say is that that's just sad. I mean, why is it that there's bad songs (which cover about 80% of popular music) and then there's Eurovision songs (which are over-simplified bad songs)? Seriously, I heard about 3-5 songs that can be thought as musically at least OK, and the ones that got the most points certainly weren't them (which also shows the degradation of the taste of music for Europe).

Let's see, there was (I have to search these off Youtube) Lithuania, that was left almost at the bottom (though at least some country gave them 12 points), the singing wasn't that great but the background was quite good, then there was Slovenia, Bulgaria wasn't bad, Germany was OK too, although it was quite basic without much originality (in comparison to other songs of the same genre). Then there might've been something that was just half-bad, but I don't remember what now...

But the winner ended up being a truck-driver lesbian with mediocre singing and a really, really bad song...

I quite liked the Serbian song It was maybe not the best of the songs, but still it was the performed song

Personally, I really had high hopes for Hungary and their quiet blues ballad, but sadly they didn't win. The German song was sort of OK, the same
was Latvia's.

The French contribution sounded like something from the 1960's, while the Swedish 'the Ark' sounded like something from the 1970's (sorry, Swedes, but it did). Unfortantely, the Danish drag....queen.... sounded like something from the 1970's too....

I don't know what we are to do....

except write some better songs of course...

And yes, everyone is tired of Belarus and Russia as well Greece and Turkey giving each other 12 points just like Norway, Sweden & Denmark has been doing for years....

I don't know what to do about this, though....

err---

Not all bigboned women are lesbians or truck-drivers

Except that Greece and Turkey never give points to each other because they have long political feud going on.

Cyprus does always give 0 to Turkey and 12 to Greece, and that's pure politics.

Turkey 12 points to Armenia.

Now I wish I had seen that song from Ukraine in its full live performed glory. (List of songs). LMAO!

Somehow I think it would be a more interesting contest if there was actually some kind of cultural thing going on, but most of everything is just the same kind of unpersonal mess you never can really tell apart. And if you've got some kind of minor local folkloristic thing going on you can damn bet on that it's messed up by the same fluffy 4/4 beats and flat singalongs out of generic_hook'o'rama which plague pop culture in exactly the same kind of way all over the World. Screw the Global Village and all that, why do you need Germans trying too hard to be Frank Sinatra, Swedes T. Rex and Englishmen ..... a mess? As always to be taken with a grain of salt, but..

ah, no really!

Having watched the whole show (and I'm not embarrassed to admit it - it's hard to take the show serious but it's the best substitute we currently have for "It's an International Knockout", which I used to love watching as a child), I must admit that for me the best singer won. She has nothing else going for her in this commercialized world, but she could sure sing, even if the song lacked in some areas.

As for the others, I thought France deserved more for their humour, far more than Ukraine which was just utter tripe. Macedonia should have got top 3 just for the legs and the wind stuff, although she also sang quite well - just a poor song. Russia was the best attempt at commercialized pop and probably deserved finishing position. Germany and Hungary probably gave the most Professional all-round performances. Ireland had an awesome song and awesome music - but probably the most awful singer of the evening. Pity. As for the UK, well, I'd really rather not comment other than to say that they were lucky to score so many points. But us Brits haven't taken this competition seriously for years anyway (it reached its lowest point when they chose Michael Ball to represent us and rather than giving anyone else a chance, had him sing 8 songs or so and people voted on the best one. I think we just gave up after that crap).

As for the political/territorial voting, it's really always been that way. We're all so close but many of our cultures are still so far away that it really is no wonder. No disrespect meant but the Ugly Duckling won, something we rarely witness in this day and age. I don't believe politics had a major say in the overall winner. Credit to her. I had her down as the winner before the Final started and regret not having a bet on it. But I think my testosterone-induced brain still would have talked me out of betting on Serbia and persuaded me to go with Macedonia. Darn you, testosterone.

Yupp.

People from abroad use to praise Europe for its supposedly diverse culture. You can immediately tell they have never once seen Eurovision.

That said, The Ark should have started with this. The ending=awesome.

I am glad that my country won but let's admit - all songs in Eurovision, almost every year, are trash.
"Molitva" ("Prayer") from Marija Serifovic was pretty good song IMHO because of the chours and especially because of the lyrics.
I didn't hear all songs, but Finland's was good.
And, yeah, Marija is crazy-looking-fat girl with nice voice. I don't like her neither.

I didn't watch all of it since I got so fed up after the Ukraine entry. This morning when I woke up I found myself singing Leave me alone I wanna go home I don't want to see you so leave me alone (Finnish entry)
That was a great song which most likely will be played a lot on Swedish radio channels. Hanna Pakarinen has a beautiful voice imo and she's also really beautiful. She reminded me of some kind of elf that Jaz would draw.

The winning song was nice. I can't remember it though.

And about the political/territorial voting, like others have said, it has always been like that.

I hate it how people are saying "lesbian" like it's a bad thing.

EDIT: Though only just now I found out that she really is a lesbian... and religious.

EDIT: And now I found out that she said she wants a husband and kids, so we may never know, apparently.

I hate how people keep emphasising that she's supposedly ugly and fat and I don't know what. What the hell does her looks have to do with it?

I thought it was a welcome break to see a normal girl dressing how she feels comfortable, and not in some skimpy outfit. Besides, she had a very cute and pretty face, but we're supposed to judge the singing and the music, not the person. Do you have to look like a supermodel to be "allowed" to go on stage?
[/rant finished]

Oh and the Arks song was based on the 1970-ties and Abba, that's why they wore those clothes and make-up. It was pure Retro music, with everything that goes with it, and a lot of homages to Abba's music..

Agrees wholeheartedly! I'm sick and tired of how women/girls in showbusiness have to look sexy to be accepted. I know there are exceptions so there's no need to prove that. Still a huge part of what our daughters grow up to admire are "perfect" sex godesses.

That was the point I was making. But I am being honest when I say I enjoyed watching the Macedonia entry far more. It's a personal visual thing. My point was the Serbia entry won more on merit than looks, as I'm sure most would agree, which is actually a compliment to the singers talent.

Wasn't really your entry I were reacting to. It was more a reaction to comments I've seen all over the web that comment on on her winning..
Of course I accept that people have personal tastes, I probably like "The Ark's" song so much because I think the main singer is really charming, I just get very irritated when people go "oh, she's so ugly and fat, and etc"..

No, but a woman who is singing some love song(-ish at least) song surrounded by women and looking at them in a very suggestive way does suggest that (yay for repetion). Also truck drivers are known to usually be quite manly, women too, and she certainly was that. And of course combine the facts that she looked like a man (and apparently tried to too) and was surrounded by good-looking women, and there was quite a lot of, well, intimacy in the act overall, there's some more indication.

And also, yes, I was (and am) being completely serious and am not approving of differences.

Ukraine was robbed! Damnit, tanzen! www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxKW2kMK-kA
I actually liked our song, it grew on me. Hanna was too nervous and looked like she gained weight after the national finals, though (I didn't like the dress either).http://
