Default Though I try to forget

It just can't be done.
Each time the doorbell rings,
I still run.
...
One less bell to answer,
one less egg to fry

Aaaaaaiiiieeeeee, this song (One Less Bell to Answer by the Fifth Dimension) has been STUCK in my head for 3 straight days now, since I heard it somewhere. Keerist, it's fooking old too, but I guess what you hear when you're young can stick.

Last year, I almost totally ruined a Paul McCartney tune that I love because it would just. not. go. away!
Slipping into stockings,
Stepping into shoes,
Dipping in the pocket of her raincoat.
Ah, it's just another day.
- and -
So sad, so sad,
Sometimes she feels so sad.
Alone in her apartment she'd dwell,
Till the man of her dreams comes to break the spell.
Ah, stay, don't stand around, and he comes and he stays
But he leaves the next day, so sad
Sometimes she feels so sad.
Please -- KILL ME NOW!

Okay, not -- please do not kill me.

So what song has been stuck in your head lately?

Save Me by Nickleback:

Say it for me, say it to me
And I'll leave this life behind me
Say it if it's worth savin' me

Nothing Left to Lose by Mat Kearney

Come on and we'll sing, like we were free
Push the pedal down watch the world around fly by us
Come on and we'll try, one last time
I'm off the floor one more time to find you
And here we go there's nothing left to choose
And here we go there's nothing left to lose

Loretta Lynn's Fist City:

You been spreadin' your brags around town
That you been a-lovin' my man
But the man I love, when he picks up trash
He puts it in a garbage can
Well that's what you look like to me
And what I see's a pity
You better pick up your feet if you don't want to eat
A meal that's called "Fist City"

If you don't want to go to Fist City
You better detour around my town
'Cos I'll grab you by the hair of the head
And I'll pick you offa the ground
I'm not a-sayin' my man's a saint ('cos he ain't)
And that he won't cat around with a kitty
I'm here to tell you gal, lay off'a my man
If you don't want to go to Fist City

Well, yeah, you're right. Maybe not ruined, though, but the effect of the song can wear down after awhile, if I let it, or try too hard to feel it. I like to shove another song in there to take its place before that happens though. And then it takes time before I start to feel it again. Before this one, I had that "Numa Numa" song by O-Zone in my head for a few weeks... It was my own fault, however, for listening to it so much. Kinda catchy.

Follow You, Follow Me by Genesis.
Stay with me,
My love I hope youll always be
Right here by my side if ever I need you
Oh my love

In your arms,
I feel so safe and so secure
Everyday is such a perfect day to spend
Alone with you

I will follow you will you follow me
All the days and nights that we know will be
I will stay with you will you stay with me
Just one single tear in each passing year

With the dark,
Oh I see so very clearly now
All my fears are drifting by me so slowly now
Fading away

I can say
The night is long but you are here
Close at hand, oh Im better for the smile you give
And while I live

I will follow you will you follow me
All the days and nights that we know will be
I will stay with you will you stay with me
Just one single tear in each passing year there will be

I will follow you will you follow me
All the days and nights that we know will be
I will stay with you will you stay with me
Just one single tear in each passing year

My new father-in-law asked what was that song with all of the electric banjos in it...

Anyway, while you have my condolences (especially regarding the 'nah, nah, nah, nah...' parts in the outtro), you can do far, far worse with Phil Collins.

She seems to have an invisible touch yeah
She reaches in, and grabs right hold of your heart
She seems to have an invisible touch yeah
It takes control and slowly tears you apart.

Today was the day for having songs stuck in my head.

First Johnny Mercer's My Momma Done Told Me:
My Momma done told me
When I was in knee pants
A man will smile at you
And give you those sad eyes...

Followed by Aretha Franklin's Chain Of Fools:
For five long years
I thought you were my man
But I found out
I'm just a link in your chain

You got me where you want me
I ain't nothin' but your fool
You treated me mean
Oh, you treated me cruel

Ya told me to leave you alone
My Papa said "Come on home"
My doctor said "Take it easy"
Aw but your lovin' is much too strong

I'm added to your...
Chain-chain-chain
Chain of fools

One of these mornings
The chain is gonna break
But up until then
I'm gonna take all I can take

Chain-chain-chain
Chain of fools

It is on my short list of first dance songs, along with What I like about You (Romantics) and Somebody (Depeche Mode). I've got really weird tastes, though it is a moot point since marriage is not in my cards.

Well, for the past few days it's been Zabadak by Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick, and Tich, which featured in an episode of Sounds of the Sixties last week.

Zabadak
Kara ka kora, ka karakak
Zabadak
Shai shai skagalak

Actually, I just got it out of my head. And now it's back. Thanks.

I get songs stuck it my head all the time, but never to the point that it gets really bothersome, I don't think it's ever lasted for weeks. Maybe it gets a little bothersome if I can't listen to it.

What I've had stuck in my head the longest recently:

Well they say I should approach you with caution
But not to let you be aware of my fear
Never know what you'll find, Don't understand your kind 'round here
Watching your moves, They look so radical
Hearing your words, They sound fanatical
Something inside reveals you're magical
Ohuoh, How can I get enough

(chorus)
You're a strange animal, That's what I know
But you're a strange animal, I've got to follow

They've been trying to stick a line in your system
Analysing the defenses you hold
Trying to open wide, Hoping to step inside your soul
But everything here is unfamiliar
Nothing they've seen remotely similar
How can it be you're so peculiar
Ohuoh, How can I get enough

(chorus) , O Ominous Spiritus!

Anyone have any idea what ominus spiritus means?

Actually, I'm with you, Undeaf. There's always something playing in my head. Usually if it gets annoying, I can have a word with the DJ and convince him to put something else on. The replacement is not necessarily better, but at least it's different.

"Ominus spiritus" sounds like slightly dodgy Latin, meaning exactly what it sounds like: ominous spirit. If I've got my grammar right, the correct phrase would be "ominosus spiritus".

I always seem to have unfinished songs in my head

What I mean is that I'm always changing parts and lyrics of songs that I'm writing or planning to write, and those songs keep haunting me untill I either finish them or get plain sick of them.

Usually it's untill I get sick of them because I never seem to find the time to record them.

The weird thing is that sometimes I'm asked what song it is, that I seem to be singing ever so quietly under my breath. And then I have to tell people that it's not a true song yet...

...God I feel so autistic at times like that.

Please tell me that some of you guys make up songs as well from time to time.
Then I would feel a little less weird about it.

Dark Veil, I change the words of songs all the time. Unfortunately, most of my efforts are of such a lewd nature that they are not fit for printing here.

However, we are not alone. Aside from the considerable body of work by Weird Al Yankovic, others have released albums of re-worded songs.

One of my favorites, to the tune of George Jones' She Thinks I Still Care:

Just because my attic's full of hubcaps
Just because my basement's full of tires
Just because I ground the numbers off her engine block
She thinks I steal cars

"Come jump in my car", interspersed by the "Ooga Chacka!" of "Hooked on a Feeling", both by the Evil Hass.

I didn't even listen to those songs! Why are they stuck in my head?!

Please kill me now.
