Academy Awards Nominations

The Academy Awards were announced today. There really was no surprises as it's pretty much the exact same as the Golden Globes. It is good to see A Mighty Wind nominated for Best Song, although Eugene Levy should've been nominated too.

I'd say the Keisha Castle-Hughes nomination was a huge surprise.

Other than that I'm hoping for "Lost in Translation" all the way.

Excellent!

Gah, I can't wait to see Lost in Translation and 21 Grams.

Jake 01-27-2004 09:21 AM

Where did "Boundin'" play in theaters?

Kolzig 01-27-2004 09:26 AM

This year I seem to be only interested in

best actor, best picture, best director, best animated short film, best music song&score

the other awards are not that interesting...

I'm going to go crazy of joy, if Johnny Depp or Bill Murray wins the best actor Oscar, althoughi already know Sean Penn will get the award...

Also the Best picture will go to Mystic River, and I'm still hoping they'll surpise me by saying that Lotr:RotK is the winner.

best director goes to Peter Jackson, please let it go to him.

I really want to see that Roy Disney's animated short film Destino http://www.oscars.com/nominees/nom_33046.html

Propably best music won't go to Howard Shore beacuase he won already one with FotR, even though he's score is the best candidate, and I'd like Annie Lennox to win the best song award.

Not sure, but I bet they'll have it up on the pixar site by Feb. 29.

Jake 01-27-2004 10:35 AM

There's a little clip of it up now. I guess it was in some LA animation festival or something. I'd thought maybe it would be playing in front of Home on the Range when that opened, but that's not for a while... I thought?

Yeah, I saw the clip. Did anyone else have trouble getting it to run? I had to look through the HTML and go to the actual .mov file in order to get it to run.

A better bet will be that Boundin' runs in front of The Incredibles. Pixar shorts don't usually pop up on regular WDP pictures.

I'm hoping Roy Disney wins that Oscar though, so he can show up Eisner ;)

Well, at least American Splendor got a Best Writing nomination, which it certainly deserved, even if it didn't get anything else.

My take at who should leave with statuettes tomorrow night, if anybody cares:

Best movie - either Lost in Translation or Return of the King. Master and Commander is a captivating film, beautifully shot and with tremendous acting, but doesn’t have the touch of genius that couple have. I haven’t seen Mystic River, and any award for Seabiscuit would be a misunderstanding.

Best Director - Peter Jackson. Actually, I seem to be in minority in thinking that Lord of the Rings finale was slightly weaker than the previous two installments, but Jackson's work was so far underrated by the Academy, so it would be a fair choice

Best Actor - I will keep my fingers crossed for heart-breaking, silent performance by Bill Murray.

Best Actress - if only voters fail to confuse good acting with gaining weight, I suggest Naomi Watts. Stupid as it is to judge a movie by its trailer (I won’t be able to watch it earlier than in two weeks time), I'm very positive about 21 grams, because: 1) Amores Perros rocked, 2) I love stories told not in chronological manner, 3) if Naomi is at least half as good as in Mulholland Drive, it's worth seeing for her.

Best Supporting Actress - Zellweger in Cold Mountain, just quit nominating her!* Otherwise, Patricia Clarkson seems to be an outstanding actress who sort of appeared out of the blue.

Best Original Screenplay - Sofia Coppola. Period.

Best Adapted Screenplay - hmm, why not LOTR, especially seeing how miserable most of its opponents look? Surely it wasn't easy to extract a cohesive screenplay from the Tolkien's two thousand page epic (even though they shouldn't have excluded Saruman!).

Best Cinematography - Master and Commander, Best Music - Danny Elfman rules, all the technicals - Return of the King. Other categories: I either don't care or know too little about the nominees (like in Foreign Language Films, out of which, sadly, I had heard only about one).

Sorry for that, but I am a movie afficionado, and I wanted to share...

*Just kidding. This time she really deserves the praise, but for the last two years, her nominations were rather far-fetched.

Well, I'm of the opinion that ROTK was slightly better than TTT, but unquestionably not as strong as FOTR, the best of series by far.

Er... Have you seen American Splendor? The last thing I would ever call it is "miserable" (at least if you're talking about quality). I'd pick that over ROTK.

emma 02-28-2004 12:26 PM

I gotta say, 21 grams totally blew me away! It was like some weird mix between Memento and Short Cuts (Altman's movie, if you recall it). Naomi was absolutely marvellous, and I'm totally hoping she will snag that one. And Bill Murray... wow... Who knew? Coppola is absolutely somebody that's going to be on my must see list from now on. Virgin Suicides was magnificent, as was Lost in Translation.

I totally hope that ROTK will win the Oscar, it would seem like a nice round-up for the incredibly artistic work and wear that those guys have put in. And the fact that so many actually liked it enough to come back to it. Even the most hardened critic, still wouldn't call any of the movies bad, and that alone is an achievement, methinks.

Intrepid Homoludens 02-28-2004 12:49 PM

Yeah, I think ROTK (and the entire trilogy, for that matter) proves that very popular movies don't necessarily mean that they're less substantial than other kinds of films.

And emma, I haven't yet had the pleasure of Lost in Translation, but you must see Girl with a Pearl Earring. If you like Scarlett Johanssen's candid performance in Translation, you'll like her more formal, restrained work in Earring. She is now on my list of favourite actresses. BTW, Earring is the only Oscar nominated movie I've seen. I'm been so damn behind living in the cornfields. :(

Well, I did mean the quality, but I said "most of its opponents". The American Splendor was never released here (and is not likely to  , unless maybe it gets the Oscar), so I can't comment on that. But Seabiscuit is a joke, and City of God - I love when the Academy appreciates non-English speaking movies - but that one's overhyped.

Ah ok, it's really a great movie. It's sort of a pseudo-documentary, and the way it's done is very unique. I know the title "American Splendor" makes it sound dumber than it is, but it's meant in an ironic sense: there's really nothing "splendid" about the lives presented in the film (or the comic book on whose author the movie is based).

Totally agree.

Kolzig 02-29-2004 04:52 PM

They really know how to make money with the Oscars.

I'm watching the show right now, and this non interesting red carpet bs that is going on right now is just perfect example of money making.

Rich people showing off with expensive costumes and other stuff, and the program goes on for 5 minutes, then a commercial break, 5 minutes program, a commercial break etc.

I really should've gone to sleep and wake up when the real deal goes on 40 minutes from now... :)

Kolzig 02-29-2004 05:53 PM
