My goldfish just died
The year starts bad for me. My goldfish just died. I've had it for more than 5 years. I feel sad.

You should be thankful it had that long a life. most only last 2 or 3 years tops. I had a goldfish that we bought as bait once when I was a kid and my grandmother kept it cause I begged her to. That sucker lived to be 9 and was big enough to fry (but we didn't)

I am thankful. But that makes the loss sadder. Now I don't have pets anymore. Goldfish are ideal pets: they cost almost nothing to keep, and not much time either. If you care for them they can get very old. Mine had a recurring fungus infection that eventually got the better of it. Oh well. Maybe I'll get some other fish to replace it.

A lizard maybe? I think lizards are cute.

My sympathies, tsa. But please take my perspective on this (based on my own experiences). Your pet's death should not by any means be taken as indicative of the climate of your new year. If that were the case, wouldn't any bad moment in your life then bring similar consequential emotional wrinkles for about a year? Is that a healthy way of experiencing life?
In any case, the moments of joy you had when your fish was alive is what you should be working with from inspiration. That is the real gift. Happy new year and move forward in a more enriched way from it all.

You're welcome, my dear.
My little Siamese cat, Moss Temperton, died two weeks before my birthday ten years ago (he was five years, quite young to pass away). He meant the world to me then, as that time was the absolute worst time in my life for several reasons and he was the only true friend I had - never questioned me, never betrayed me, and was always there for a hug. When he died I died in my heart, but I took it as a sign that it was a great time to sit down and think and plan a great change for myself, which I did. Moss is still, will always be, with me. Even today I convulse a little from giggling from the memory of how sweet, loyal, and snuggly he was. I wouldn't have such moments today if I had never gotten him then.

Well, a cat has a lot more personality than a fish of course. Still I'll mis the fish. The past year was quite emotional for me, and the fish dying was just that little bit too much...

Guess what happened after my cat died? My ex's friend tried to cheer me up by presenting me with two goldfish, the kind with lightbulb eyes. It was a small comfort. They both died a few weeks later, I think the damn L.A. water killed them.
Just imagine how I felt after that. I haven't taken another pet since. A pet is a pet is a pet, no matter what form it takes. If it provides you love and companionship for a while, that's what you work with. When it leaves you, cherish the moments you had with it and wish it well on its journey to heaven.

I think I will stay petless for a while now. Maybe I'll take the plunge and get myself one or two cats in the future.

gecondoleert! I had 2 dead fish this year. 3 in the past year and a half. but just go buy another, and you can love that for the next 5 years. dead is a part of life so you better just accept it.

Goldfish are a pain in the arse to maintain - I think so anyway, changing the water when I had 2 gold fish years ago was painful. Gimme a Dog any day.
Sorry for your loss though, maybe next time you can get a Dog or Cat, something that shows love.

I'd like to have a cat, but I have to think about it. No goldfish for me anymore, that's for sure!

Yes, they are very cute. They're my little tigers. They are like little miniature versions.
