Oh yes there is.

Chicago has it's own distinct accent, but the rest of the Midwest has a particular sound as well.

RLacey: Eh, don't feel bad. I doubt I could place an American accent by anything more than general region either, except for a Brooklyn or Bostonian accent.

I've personally been told I speak with more of a Midwestern accent than a New England one. I've also occasionally had people ask me if I'm British.

As for East Coasters being unfriendly, pfft. Don't judge us all by NYC! I had one amusing encounter in an elevator there that highlighted the difference between the friendliness of my area and the suspicion of NYC folk.

Peace & Luv, Liz

Borat is a perfect example of how unfriendly New Yorkers are. "Don't come near my face! Kiss me and I'll fucking kill you!"

That's because they are a lot alike.

Yeah, the movie Borat demonstrates how unfriendly New Yorkers are to kissy-inclined Kazakh reporters.

I've been asked if I'm Irish, due to my distinctive accent.

I've been mistaken for an American once while speaking Swedish (which is my mother tongue).

Sounds Scottish to me, although it's a fairly light accent.

I'm almost tempted to post a "What Do You Sound Like?" thread...

That could be interesting. Not sure I have a mic, though.

There was something similar. It was called What does your voice sound like to someone. I'll have to see if I can find it.

On the contrary; I'm implying nothing of the sort.

What I'm saying is that people from the Midwest, which is geographically located in the North-central part of the US and may therefore legitimately be referred to simply as "North", have a very distinctive accent that is unlike the accents from other parts of the country.

If you're from that part of the country, it is understandable that to your ears Midwesterners would have no discernable accent because you've become accustomed to it. I'm from the South and to my ears the comedian Jeff Foxworthy has no accent, but to people in other parts of the country his accent is both obvious and very thick.

When did I ever say any part of the US speaks without an accent?

I'm guessing you're refering to this. That doesn't look like the north central part of the US to me. One minute you're refering to it as the "northern" dialect, the next as "midwestern", when it's in the northeastern part of the states.

It might sound very unique and odd to you, but that doesn't mean it doesn't cluster together with other variaties of english; from what I can tell, it clusters with the rest of the northeast.
