You've just used the one word of description that I really didn't want you to use. For reasons that I will elaborate on once I've actually seen the episode (probably on Wednesday).

It's a spin off of Dr. Who with a much darker edge I believe. I bet it'll make its way over to America at some point. I look forward to it.

Has it begun already? I've seen advertisements for it on half the buses in the city, and the trailer on BBC3, but I hadn't realised that it was something in the present and not in some nebulous future of programming.

To be honest, I can't say that I'm terribly interested based on what I've seen of it. It looks like all of the elements I don'tcare for of the new series distilled into something new. All intrigue, soap opera, and fantastic realism, without the Doctor, the TARDIS, alien planets and other imaginitive escapism.

Do please tell me if I'm wrong, of course. I could use a reason or two to switch on the TV aside from watching the Simpsons dubbed into German.

Episode 1

Spoiler:
My guess is they have watched "Men in Black" one too many times plus it felt like a remake of "Rose" the Dr Who pilot.

As first episodes go t'was awright. Can't say I was blown away by it.

It was vaguely humorous (How do I get some of that spray stuff), exciting and full of sexy welsh accents (Eve Myles is gorgeous).

So Cpt Jack is immortal after Rose brought him back to life. Interesting.

Next up a species rip off episode.

Episode 2

Spoiler:
Blah!!!

The characters are ok. The interplay between Cpt Jack and Gwen is interesting. The other 2 characters are pretty anonymous so far however.

They need to stop ripping off sci-fi plots from elsewhere. This one was a definite Species meets Outer Limits (episode Caught in the Act - Alyssa Milano).

Might take time for this to grow on me.

Next weeks epiodes looks interesting though.

Basically I thought the 2 main characters were ok. Eve Myles is cute. Too many gratuitious helicopter shots of Cardiff (Cpt Jack with the Batman pose, Him and Gwen on the roof- wtf).

It's idea of being "adult" is to remake Dr Who and stick in some swear words, Knob gags and sex scenes, but it felt forced. Unlike say Buffy where the tone and writing made it feel adult. Torchwood felt like a kids show and the swearing was out of place.

Finally get some original scripts and stop ripping off other show.

So not a great start, but maybe it will improve.

That's what I've been worrying about since I saw the trailers. And it appears that my fears have been realised.

Oh well. I'll still watch the first couple of episodes.

Pff, rubbish. It was great fun. I'm no Doctor Who purist, so maybe I should have got upset about some terrible abuse of the Who mythos, but both me and my wife enjoyed it, and my wife rarely if ever likes UK TV Drama!

And apparently, the first episodes got 2.3million viewers which is the highest ever non-sport rating for a digital-only channel.

You missed a derivative comment Lucien
Cardiff is on a rift in space-time that attracts alien beings.
Does that sound at all like
Sunnydale is on a Hellmouth that attracts supernatural beings
at all?

I found it enjoyable enough but not in an "I must get home in time for the next episode" sort of way. I does seem to be trying TOO hard to justify its "adult" label. For goodness sake just write some good stories and let the adult content filter in naturally.

I'll give it a fair shake but I'm not a mad fan. The new Doctor Who I find patchy but generallly watchable.

i liked it, but i thought it would be better if it had NO connection to Doctor Who, since the added grittiness seems rather forced...
not as good as Lost though.

Both episodes were quite good. Interesting how they're handling the formula. Jack as the Doctor is an unusual premise, but it seems to be working. I'm looking forward to more.

sure, its the kind of plot you'd expect in some doctor who spinoff porno but it was still pretty good.

Did you find out by watching Charlie Brooker's Screen Wipe, or did you add the apparently gratuitously and you're secretly a dirty Red Hot Viewer's Wives 40+ subscriber? Enquiring minds, er, enquire.

I'm disappointed that Lacey has singularly failed to see Torchwood yet, since I came into this thread hoping to be able to cry "Hah! WRONG! Told you it'd be good." But alas, it is not to be.

For my part, I really enjoyed Torchwood. The first few minutes of the opening episode felt painful for some unspecified reason - I think the police scenes felt too stagy - but that soon evaporated. I enjoyed those two episodes more than some episodes of the new Who.

Perhaps I've been spoiled by not watching Buffy or Angel or any of that bobbins, but the 'adult tone' didn't feel particularly forced to me - it was barely even present, the obvious central theme of Episode 2 aside. ¬¬

It felt just like I think it should have done, a healthy dose of escapism that you can enjoy without sneering at it being 'for kids'. I'll be watching next week anyway!
