Strangely enough, my copy of Excel converts it to 10-Sep. Who'd have thought it eh?

Windows is quite good at incorporating regional differences into the OS and its programs, even if you do still need to tell it at least three times during installation that you don't live in Seattle.

You can spot people (in the UK) who haven't bothered, because their system tray displays a 12-hour clock. And those are pretty stupid. I'm saying nothin'.

I always reconfigure mine to a 12-hour clock, as I hate the 24-hour clock.

It's a good thing the latest vbulletin update provides an option to resolve this problem.

So I spent about twenty minutes typing out a lengthy rebuttal to your points about the dating system, and Firefox went and crashed on me.

So how about you all pretend you read it, agreed with it, and now recognize the American system for the wonder it is?

Sure. As long as you don't forget to blame Canada.

Can we pretend we read it, disagreed violently with it and typed out lengthy rebuttals of your rebuttal?

We have to remember that America is a very young nation, they haven't learnt things like how to write the date yet.

Sure. Canada probably deleted all those rebuttals.

On behalf of the rebuttals, "Sorry we could not attend. Some rather fetching Canadians distracted us, and we are currently being held hostage in a basement apartment in Hamilton."

I've been thinking about this "the month is so important so it should come first" idea.

Surely the important part changes the closer the event gets.

For example, back in June it was enough for me to know my mother's birthday was in October. Now it is October it's far more important for me to know it's the 12th.

Which is..........um............tomorrow. Excuse me..................

I agree completely. But you don't use a three date system when referring to a day that is almost upon us. You yourself said, "it's the 12th" and not, "it's 10/12/06". And when things are far off, you usually say only the year ("That happened in 1940" or "This will be finished in 2012"). The three-date system really only seems to be used with frequency during the middle period where month is most important.

Just tell your mother Canada stole her present.

Let's see... where is the three-date system used?

Birthdates - what's important there depends on the context. Could be anything.
Food - this bread was baked yesterday. Day important.
Signing of documents - year?

I thought about things like wedding invitations, but for these more personal things I think the date tends to be written out in full.
