Closest I've come to splurging recently was buying Hexen and Hexen 2 in a charity shop (the magnificent sum of £5.00 for both)

On a household basis we are in the progress of getting http://fireplacemegastore.co.uk/cast...egra/index.htm fitted. We had the fire-place cleared out on Friday (dodgy 70s gas fire, naff brick hearth and, rather bizarrely, hardwood surround, because that's a great thing to put around a fire :crazy: ) The plasterer is coming in to do the walls on Monday. The fire itself will be fitted on Friday.

Mrs Urhan is paying for that one. I pay the mortgage, phone, power, etc and she saves her money for nice stuff like this, food and holidays.

Is this a good time to mention that Hexen, Hexen 2 and Heretic, as well as the Hexen expansion pack, will set you back $9.95 + tax on Steam?

Still, not supporting charity that way. And you don't get the CDs.

I didn't watch either series when they were broadcast, so figured it was about time I got my hands on them. I'm about halfway through Planet Earth, and am pretty well gobsmacked. Truly stunning stuff. The polar bear and elephant bits brought a tear to my eye though ;(

As I think I've posted, I bought and watched both of those in the last month or so. They're both brilliant works, well worth it. I'll probably re-watch them in a few months.

I think I detected a tiny amount of re-used Blue Planet footage in Planet Earth, but not enough to matter. If you can only get one, the latter is better than the former.

The Art of Ralph McQuarrie

Really nice coffee-table art book from an independent publisher. In case you didn't know, Ralph McQuarrie is the guy who did all the production paintings for the original Star Wars films. This book has a selection of stuff from his entire career, though, not just that trilogy.

McQuarrie is a meticulous craftsman; the book has loads of examples of cases where he'd do a production painting featuring a certain ship or character design, for instance, and then repaint the whole thing after the modelmakers altered the ship's look, or the makeup people changed the design.

Especially of note in this respect are his paintings of the early Millennium Falcon. Here's an example. (That particular painting, sadly, didn't make it into the final book, but it can be seen in the recently-published volume The Making of Star Wars, which is refreshingly unbiased in its narrative of the first film's evolution.)

Well, this isn't a splurge, but today I was visited by UPS, and was given a free novel I won in a raffle I entered on a website! Kind of a nice surprise to get in the middle of the week.

Harsh Realm: The Complete Series

An interesting one, this. It's another Chris Carter vehicle, and it got cancelled after all of three episodes. And I can kind of see why, particularly as it's not as good as Millennium :P. That said, from what I've seen so far, it has its moments. And it also has Terry O'Quinn, which helps.

I got one to, a couple a weeks ago, did you get to 320GB or the 500GB version? I got the 500GB...

I got myself the 320 GB version last week. I already had two Toshiba external drives that are better, but I couldn't find them anywhere. The Toshibas spin down after they've not been used for a while, AND they have a decent on/off switch. I now have the LaCie, that contains all my data, connected to a slug, and the Toshibas as backup drives. The slug acts as a data server on my home network. It can automagically copy the contents of one drive to the other at a specified time every so many days. Every now and then I take one data drive to work, and put the other data drive on the slug. In this way I keep most of my precious data when my house burns down or is visited by burglars.

I got the 500gb. :)

I need one of those, I keep filling up my hard drive and having to burn stuff onto DVDs, an external drive would be handy.
