Surgery for 'ugly' goldfish | Yahoo News

LONDON (AFP) - A goldfish has undergone surgery after visitors to the Scottish museum where it was housed said it looked ugly, officials said.

The fish, which lives in a pond the Royal Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh, had a cyst over one of its eyes, leading some viewers to protest that it was unsightly. But a spokesman said surgeons removed the fish's eye in the process.

"We sought professional advice and were told the best course of action would be to remove the eye as a precautionary measure," said the spokesman.

"The cyst has been removed but the fish is back in the pond and seems very happy."

The operation was paid for using coins thrown in to the pond by visitors to the museum.
Intruder killed by nurse was hit man, police say | CNN.com, 6:31 a.m. EDT, September 16, 2006

PORTLAND, Oregon (AP) -- When Susan Kuhnhausen returned home from work one day earlier this month, she encountered an intruder wielding a claw hammer. After a struggle, the 51-year-old nurse fended off her attacker by strangling him with her bare hands.

Neighbors praised the woman for her bravery, and investigators said they believed the dead man -- Edward Dalton Haffey -- was burglarizing Kuhnhausen's home.

But after an investigation, police now say the intruder Kuhnhausen strangled was apparently a hit man hired by her estranged husband -- Michael James Kuhnhausen Sr. -- to kill her.

The 58-year-old husband was taken into custody Thursday and charged with conspiracy to commit murder and attempted murder. He was ordered held on $500,000 bail.

...An emergency room nurse who lives in a southeast Portland neighborhood, Susan Kuhnhausen arrived home on the evening of September 6 to find Haffey coming at her with a claw hammer.

She was struck in the head and wrested the weapon away, but the struggle continued and Haffey bit the nurse, according to police. A large woman, she was eventually able to get the slight Haffey into a chokehold and police later found him dead in a hallway. An autopsy revealed the cause of death as strangulation.

Police say she acted in self-defense.

This just in: Nobody Cares.

Earlier reports of people not caring was incorrect. The correct news was that Trep has crabs.

Botox Addiction

Botox has been dubbed the "lunchtime facelift", loved by women – and a growing number of men – for its miraculous ability to erase wrinkles and restore youthful good looks.

But the concern is that once you start keeping the unwanted effects of ageing at bay, you will not be able to stop, according to research to be presented at a conference this week.

Botox is the No1 non-surgical cosmetic treatment

The first study of its kind, carried out by a psychologist and plastic surgeon, suggests that four in 10 people who use Botox have a compulsion to do so repetitively, prompting fears that it is addictive.

Although the effects of the jab are virtually instantaneous, they wear off over the course of four to six months, meaning that top-ups are needed to maintain a wrinkle-free complexion.

Some plastic surgeons report that users come back to demand more injections at the first signs of a slight facial crease, well before the time it takes for Botox to wear off.

Although the safety profile of Botox is excellent, experts warn that there are no long-term studies of side-effects, leading to fears that "Botox addicts" could be running unknown health risks.

More than half of regular Botox users said they felt a lack of control over the natural ageing process without the jab, with a similar number admitting that Botox made them "feel" younger too.

Botox, which is the brand name for botulinum toxin-A, a nerve poison and the same bacteria that causes botulism, a very serious form of food poisoning, is the number one non-surgical cosmetic treatment in Britain.

Mintel, the market research group, estimates that more than 100,000 treatments are given in Britain each year, with a year's supply of Botox costing about £900.

Dr Carter Singh, who has a degree in psychology and is based at Derbyshire Royal Infirmary, and the consultant plastic surgeon Martin Kelly, of London Plastic Surgery Associates, are due to present their full findings at the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons conference in London on Friday. The study aims to help plastic surgeons to spot the signs of "Botox addiction".

Dr Judy Evans, a plastic surgeon at the Nuffield Hospital in Plymouth, said: "People come to have Botox because they are worried about ageing and then they get told they look younger and healthier by their friends and family, so they do actually start to 'feel' younger. They rely on Botox to help them achieve that feeling."

Gemma Numan, the wife of Gary Numan, the pop star, has spoken of her addiction to cosmetic treatments.

"I have regular injections of Botox," she said. "When I have had one treatment, I can't wait for the next. Every minute takes me nearer to my goal: looking better and feeling happier. Without it, I feel ugly, unsexy and unlovable."

However, Dr Daniel Sister, an anti-ageing specialist of Beautyworks West clinic in Notting Hill, west London, doubts whether Botox is addictive.

"If you have Botox every three months, the muscles that cause the lines will be kept weak, so you need inject only a smaller amount. If you compare two people at the end of the year, one having Botox every six months and one every three months, they will probably have had the same amount of Botox.

"There are different opinions on what is right but I doubt that this is truly an addiction."

Jelena 09-18-2006 09:07 AM

OK, it's not exactly fun to see the wrinkles appear and to start finding a grey hair or two (three, four.... ). I guess most people are at least bit concerned about how they look.

But this is just sad. I wonder if they use botox on their hands as well since hands really can show your age.

What if it turns out that Botox only can be used x amount of times/x milligrams and then the whole face collapses.

:D
I've always had a hard time gaining weight, but now that I'm in my (early)
40s those days are over but the weight I gain ends up in the wrong places and I don't like that! :(
I guess I'll just keep walking my dog and accept my wrinkles. ;)
