Gabriel Knight 2 - The scratched discs within - download illegal?
Off to chit chat you go!
I bought a collection that includes both "Sins Of The Fathers" and "The Beast Within" and some demo stuff for the then upcoming "Blood Of The Sacred..." a couple of years ago. Only problem is: The fifth disc of the beast is scratched and doesn't play anymore, and I've lost the sixth one. Moving here and there and cramming your precious stuff into stupid cardboard boxes wasn't all that fun. Anyway, I'm really not sure, and it might be a really dumb question to ask, but asking dumb questions, that's what I was born for, aye, it is. So: Now that I've finally got a better connection again, would a download be legal? Illegal? A little bit of a grey area, it seems. Or maybe not at all. Just a dumb question. A totally dumb question. I wouldn't be surprised. Sigh.

Illegal? Yes. Wrong? No.
The downloading isn't illegal, it's the uploading.

I guess someone picked the lock.
I wouldn't say its illegal since you own the game and like Aj said it isnt wrong, youve already bought the game so your not really stealing.

Hahah, excellent point. So, yeah, it wouldn't really be stealing on my part as such, but what about the guy/girl that's providing the files in the first place? That said, I've never truly cared about reading the whole costumer license agreement stuff that ususally pops up before installling a new game, so I'm really not all that familiar with what's allowed. And what's not. Did you? Hah, don't answer. As such, I don't know if they usually say that you aquired the rights to use the software stored on this disc and this disc alone, or, say the rights to use this piece of software, period. Oh, well.

It also depends on your laws. For example, is it legal in Germany to make a copy of your game for personal use (i.e. backup?)
Here it is allowed. At least, for movies and music. Games are more of a grey area. --Erwin

Hey erwin, well, that's the thing. It wouldn't be a copy I made on my own, but from another person's disc. And who knows if that was a legal copy in the first place. Confusing.
But yes, backup copies for personal use are legal. Unless I'm not terribly, terribly mistaken here, never been that much of a backup boy, as can be seen in this thread! .

Buying the collection second hand would be just as damaging to the publisher and developer as stealing it would be...

Whther second hand is more damaging epends on whether the publisher is still selling the title I suppose.
I vote yay, download the isos to replace yours. It is indeed a grey area though. For all my purchased titles I always get a NoCD patch so I don't have to keep taking the CD out of it's safe little jewel case and perchance scratching it. The publisher may hate the principle of the thing, but it keeps me stuff that I bought in better condition.

Hey Sam. I have an extra copy of the game. It is yours for the cost of shipping if you are interested.

By the way, I'm stilling having problems to pay the shipping costs I owe to fov. And it's been like that since April, it's.. embarassing. Seems like I'm too dumb to get that PayPal thing to work at all. Quote:

PM me with your address, if shipping turns out to be a few bucks or less, I'll foot the bill. If it is more, I also accept trades.
Hmmm, I just moved too so I guess I ought to find the game first. I know it is in one of the two dozen boxes around here. ...bysmitty

fov had to pay about 7 bucks.. but I'll try if those disc images will work with my game in any case. In the meanwhile, if somebody else wants your spare copy, don't hesitate! It's not as if the game would be that hard to get hold of.

You could just host them and send him the links to disc images...but that would be wrong. So you shouldn't send me any PMs if you want me to do it.

Re: payment (both past and present), I have a working PayPal, samIamsad, and since I share the country with you, your lack of PayPal goodness shouldn't be a problem.
That's an offer to help by being a dosh-relay, in case it's not as clear as I'd hoped.

Thank you. I'll get back to you if I have any problems (err... hope that doesn't come out wrong! ). Maybe it was all fov's fault! RLacey had problems sending money to her, too...
