Squinky, it definitely is a two way street but it's a lot more complicated that men and/or women not being able to see the great woman/man in front of them. I think they do see them but a huge, huge factor in forming long term relationships is the readiness to be in a long term relationship (not just the perceived readiness).

I look around and I see lots and lots of married women in all shapes and sizes and degrees of 'hotness' so obviously there are men out there who do form long term relationships with these women. But if a man is not ready to be in that kind of relationship, even if he sees a terrific woman (and knows she's terrific), it's not to going to happen or the relationship won't last long. It doesn't in my eyes make the man (or woman) horrible or stupid or a jerk, it just means they weren't ready.

Here's a real life example of a man who was a complete jerk/asshole:

One of the technicians in my lab was dating this very cute man. They traveled in Scotland and Paris together over Christmas) and they eventually moved in together. He ended up opening a debit account in her name on PayPal and withdrawing money, he had accounts on dating sites saying he was single and asking for erotic phone calls (and left the sites bookmarked and saved his passwords), he didn't help pay the rent or the bills on their place together, etc. This to me is an example of man who is a jerk. And I should add his girlfriend is hot (but very sweet) and kicked his sorry ass out when she found out what he was up to.

But anyway. Yeah, if I had a dime for every guy I heard say, "Why can't I find a girl who's geeky/plays D&D/likes sports/plays computer games/is a programmer/etc.," yet manages to completely ignore women who *are* like that (because they aren't total babes), I'd be rich.

well holy cow that has been me my whole life. The cute guys that I liked would pass me by and go over to the really cute girl and give me the cold shoulder. I later realized that it wasn't so much that I wasn't that I was a total babe or even that I was bad looking. I thought that I was just average. I had long curly sandy blond hair to the backs of my knees, 5’1, and I was heavy chested. So one day I asked one of my guy friends what the hell is wrong with me? he told me that the (popular guys) wouldn't go out with me b/c I wouldn't put out, and the “other” girls would. That was the problem in my high school, to much caring what is on the outside instead of what is in the inside.

Hey, I like 'bad boy's. Granted, definitely not the type you're talking about, but I felt compelled to respond in jest.

Although, I do like a little wickedness as long as the guy has a kind heart.

Who's Sue? And why would George Michael want to go and visit her?

All this man-woman stuff is making me feel... strange. Things seem so difficult for straight people - the whole gender roles issue seems like a big obstacle. And it feels strange when a woman talks about a "man" acting in a particulr way and a man talks about a "woman" acting in a particular way...

Well, at least it makes me glad that in my relationships I can think of my partner (who is male) as a person, rather than see him as a representative of a gender stereotype. But rest assured, I've ahd my share of problems as well...

Anyway, I got lost.

I must say, I feel the same way as Wormsie.

I could never even imagine dating a woman, simply because a woman is such an unknown quantity.

As a man, I can relate to other men, which provides a lot of common ground for building a relationship on.

Maybe straight people enjoy the gender differences, but it does seem to make things more difficult for them.
