Not really... Actually, not at all. Which part of this brief history lesson makes the character the slightest bit interesting?

Maybe not the character, but I thought his origin was interesting.

Eah, I'm not into history. [shrugs] What matters to me is that the character is a total bore, and that'd still be the case even if the first Superman comic book had descended from the planet Krypton.

Superman has human emotions, and goes through similar emotive turmoils, that most people should be able to relate to.

Superman Returns Earns $84.3M in Five Days
Source: Box Office Mojo

ComingSoon.net reports that Superman Returns has reached $84.3 million domestically in its first five days:

After grossing over $32 million on Wednesday and Thursday, Warner Bros' Superman Returns was able to top the weekend with approximately $52.1 million in over 4,000 theatres, an average of $12,829 per theatres. Its total of $84.3 million in five days exceeded that of Batman Begins and Peter Jackson's King Kong in their first five days, but it's pretty disappointing compared to the $200 million plus price tag it cost to tell the Man of Steel's latest adventure. It wil hope to build on any word-of-mouth in the next few days before Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest takes over next weekend.

The movie is making some good money.
One thing that I will never understand is this moaning that the movie is a failure in the box office, wth?

It will make 2x the money worldwide compared to what it makes only in USA. And that 84.3 million is only after the first five days, the movie will be in circulation for several weeks so it will still make huge amounts of money for WB...

This is Hollywood we're talking about here- the difference between $90 million dollars and $92.5 million dollars is the sort of thing that keeps executives up at night.

Personally, I can understand the disappointment. The movie has been estimated to cost around $250 million to make, and then you've got to toss in a $75-$100 million advertising budget. Worst case scenario (which isn't too far from WB's best case scenario) the film has to recoup $350 million before it can start making any sort of profit. Given the fact that opening weekend for big blockbusters like this represent close to 30% of the total box office (Superman made $52 million), AND that Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest is coming out this next weekend...Superman could very likely come to a halt around $200-$220 million in the U.S.

About four years ago when Men in Black II came out on this same weekend, it did surprisingly similar business to Superman. $52.1 million for the Friday-Sunday period, and $87.2 million for the Wednesday-Sunday period. Superman had a $52.2 million Friday-Sunday, and a $84.2 million Wednesday-Sunday. And guess what Men in Black II ended its box office run at? $190 million.

Also, the movie has already been released in many overseas markets and has only made $19 million so far. Now sure, when the worldwide totals are in, WB will probably make back their money and may even make a profit. But not much of one at all... Superman Returns will probably never be considered "a hit" and will most likely be considered a box office disappointment. Studios want to make money, they don't want to just break even.

No one seriously believes it won't make its money back. But it's not about just making money- it's about making as much money as they promised their investors.

I guess Superman just isn't a superhero for the masses anymore. I'm sure that picking a relative nobody as Superman didn't help either.

Gotta love that eyeliner.

They should really write a scene where he makes out with Orlando Bloom, screw Keira Knightley. I know she looks like a boy, but it's just not the same.

Christopher Reeve was a nobody before Superman. I think it's vital to have a face which, when people see, they say: "Look, it's Superman!", as opposed to "Look, it's Nicolas Cage!", or whatever. I think Brandon Routh was a good choice. The movie itself, on the other hand, was underwhelming, even as an IMAX 3d experience.

I never said it hurt the movie. It didn't help either. Sometimes relative nobodies are fine enough (see, Hugh Jackman as Wolverine in the first X-Men) but generally speaking it's to the studio's best interests to have an actor that actually attracts audiences. Especially when you're talking about a movie that need to gross over $200 million.

When you're right, you're right. A make-out scene between Superman and Lex Luthor would certainly add depth and interest to Superman's character.
