Don't you dare start that.

Of course, we do have "American Idol", but it's not quite the same. At least Alabama has been represented well by Ruben Studdard (winner, season 3), Bo Bice (first runner-up, season 4), and Taylor Hicks (one of the top two finalists, current season).
Hey, good news Scott! From Wikipedia:

"In 2006 NBC announced plans to produce a similar show, replacing the member countries of the EBU with the different states and territories of the United States. As of May 2006 the EBU was in talks with NBC to license the rights to the Eurovision Song Contest format."

I think Europe is just returning the favour for extraordinary rendition.

It's less political than that - Israel's national broadcaster, along with those of some other non-European countries, is a paid-up member of the European Broadcasting Union, and so Israel gets to enter Eurovision.

Morocco and Armenia are in Eurovision for the same reason.

Guys, can we keep Israel bashing / supporting to another thread please?

EDIT: Yeah, I know I started it. But I wasn't ranting about the country, just asking why on earth they are in eurovision.

Well obviously I'd pick up on the nuances of Eurovision and its entries since I'm in CANADA. SILLY ME.

I know I haven't been around for a good while, but I just had to comment this. I've watched the Eurovision Song Contest for as long as I can remember (which is back in 1991 when Carola won btw) and, yes, mostly it's a load of crap, but then again it's no worse than some of the stuff coming off MTV these days. For me it's just this tradition you can't miss. I think over 150 million people watched it last year, so there's a lot of people out there lying about not watching it.

This year was special for me for several reasons, the first obviously being that Finland won for the first time in the 40 years they've been competing. It's still surreal since I think everyone over here has been so used to Finland doing very poorly (we've finished last a hell of a lot of times). Secondly I was out on an island in the middle of nowhere this year so I only had a radio at my disposal and no TV. I had checked out all the songs before hand though, so it wasn't that big a deal. I wasn't alone on this island though, in fact we were 16 all in all. And since most people were interested in listening to the show we were all crammed up in this room drinking and desperately trying to keep up with the score.

It was so surreal hearing the commentator saying that Finland got a 12 pointer. 12 points to Finland! That's crazy! A thing like this just doesn’t happen! We were seriously thinking that someone was ****ing with us, airing a fake show for us on the island. But when we came back to civilization the next day it seemed it had actually happened. Weird feeling.

So we were a bunch of people screaming "Hard Rock Hallelujah" and "We are the winners of Eurovision" out in the wilderness of the Finnish archipelago that night. Probably scared the shit out of the wildlife. A night I will probably never forget.

And it was nice to win over Sweden with that botox-injected religious thing of an artist.

All the videos can be found on the official site btw. Just go to the "Multimedia Lounge".

the fact that it is only makes the eurovision seem even more worse. BTW, MTV 2 rocks!! normal mtv sucks.

I am well aware of that. However we (Finland that is) is a good second in that category.

Sweden has won four times I think:
Abba Waterloo,
Herreys Diggiloo-diggiley,
Carola Fångad av en stormvind and
Charlotte Nilsson Take me to your heaven.

Has anyone noticed a striking similarity between this and the Finnish entry....?

By the way, I vaguely remember a friend back at college showing me a clip from that very site two years ago I believe. Do they make a new one every year? The lyrics went something like "I've got money in my pocket. I'm gonna fly away in my space rocket." And then a countdown and some super trashy beats kicked in. Like "Five, four, three, one, ZERO!!!" Or something. Super funny, in any case.

edit: rotfl. I've found it.

Zlad! - Elektronik supersonik ()

Quote:
Hey baby wake up from your a sleep
We have arrived onto the future
And the whole world is become....

Elektronik, Supersonik,
Supersonik, Elektronik,

Hey baby ride with me away,
We doesn't have much time,
My blue jeans is tight,
So onto my love rocket, climb,
Inside tank of fuel is not fuel, but love,
Above us, there is nothing above,
but the stars, above

All systems gone!
Prepare for downcount!

5....4....3....1! Off blast!

Second. Best. Clip. Ever.

I think he's just shaking his fist in a pretty awkward way. Funny line indeed. "Hey love crusaider, I want to be your space invader" isn't all that bad, either..
