Leaving aside the safety issues for the moment, let's make this pure and simple.
It's the law and you broke it. Even if the road had been the 55 as you said you believed it was, you were still breaking the law by doing 61. Suck it up and pay the penalty. You don't find people fighting shoplifting charges by saying they were only stealing small stuff. You don't get out of assault charges by saying you only beat someone up a little bit. So why should you get off for breakng the speed limit "just a little bit officer" Even if you believed you were in a 55 limit your 61 is still more than 10% over. If your focus had slipped enough for you not to realise that, what other things might you have missed? Speed might not be the number 1 cause of accidents but it sure as hell contributes to them. Even one person killed who would have lived if someone wasn't speeding is one person too many.

Let's put things in perspective. I bet everyone here has jaywalked at one time or another, in an effort to get from A to B faster. That's also dangerous if you're not careful, and against the law. Let he who is without sin...

True, but:
A. We didn't get a ticket for jaywalking; B. We're not trying to weasel out of paying the ticket after the fact. I have gotten many a speeding ticket in my time, and I have paid them all. The price of breaking the speed limit is the occasional ticket. If you can't afford to pay these tickets, then don't break the speed limit, or at least don't whine because you got a ticket for going 16 mph over the posted speed limit.

What LenaJ said. And if you win your legal battle I'd be nothing short of stunned, so you're only going to hurt yourself by fighting this.
