I found a mac!

Amazing right? So...can I install windows onto it?

Sage 04-21-2006 05:45 AM

That depends. What is it's model number?

SakSquash 04-21-2006 06:51 AM

Lemme check...how do I tell?

Sage 04-21-2006 07:25 AM

The model number or name (IIfx, 6320, 8600/300, iMac, etc.) will be stencilled somewhere on the front of the case.
It may also say either "PowerPC", "Performa", "Centris", or "Quadra", but those are lines and not specifically individual models.

SakSquash 04-21-2006 07:29 AM

I don't see anything on the front, though I was told it's a G4?

Aj_ 04-21-2006 07:32 AM

G4 = PowerPC, you can't install windows on it.

SakSquash 04-21-2006 07:37 AM

Doh! What about Mac OS 10?

Sage 04-21-2006 07:44 AM

Okay...Is the case blue or grey?
If it's blue, you can install OS X, but it won't be very quick without a processor upgrade. (The CPU is isn't hard to swap out)
If it's grey, it should accept OS X reasonably well, but faster is always better.

SakSquash 04-21-2006 08:06 AM

Um...it's blue AND grey. Want pics?

kuze 04-21-2006 01:17 PM

G4 will handle OSX just great. In fact, even a G3 runs OSX pretty fast. Make sure you pick up the latest revision (10.4), the devs have been tweaking on the performance so the newer revisions run faster than the older ones.

Wicked!

Sure, why not?

SakSquash, most of your questions can be answered here.
Pics would be nice, though. :D

Ah yeah, that's a G4 tower alright. Should be able to run OSX no problem, unless it's really short on RAM. You should be able to check that out though by opening it up and looking at the dimms (or booting it up and choosing "About this mac" from the apple menu).

SakSquash 04-22-2006 03:49 PM

Pretty sweet find eh?

What should I do with it when I get OS X on it?

Not too shabby. As for what you should do with it... that's up to you :)

SakSquash 04-22-2006 03:58 PM

I don't need one! I just like the way it looks. Apple has got style, i'll give it that.

tabacco 04-22-2006 04:03 PM

Heh... well, remember that it's a unix box, so you can use it as a secure samba or ftp fileserver for your house or something.

SakSquash 04-22-2006 04:06 PM

Yeah, like I know how to set that all up. :P
