I just messed up a phone interview with a great company

Man I was so desperate to work for them but I never knew how tough their interview process was. I really feel very disappointed because I had the chance and I blew it :frusty:

Yeah. It's such a great company with great benefits.

Like free gourmet breakfast, lunch and dinner for example. But man, I've never had a phone interview as tough as this one.

In what way was it tough? Did you feel you were prepared? Did you know the questions ahead of time? Did you have enough practice for it?

It was a very technical interview, with some really hard technical questions, and they put you on the spot over the phone. I thought I was prepared, but I guess it wasn't enough :frown: I only had one week to prepare for it, since the recruiter called me last week and scheduled the phone interview for today. But I feel that even if I prepared longer, there was no way I was going to answer some of those questions on the spot. *Sigh* Real bummer, Google was one of the companies I really wanted to work for.

Just because you missed some questions may not necessarily mean you won't be considered (will it?). I can't imagine anyone expecting a person to get a 100% (maybe I'm being naive).

It really depends on the company. I know when I applied to Paypal for example, that they didn't care about getting 100% and their first interview was online (which is so much better than an on the spot phone interview). But from what I heard about Google, they are pretty selective.

Have they actually said "no" yet? As Mel suggested, surely they don't expect everyone to get everything "right"? Don't they always throw in insanely hard questions to test how people respond to them?

So don't give up hope yet :).

Things may not have gone as bad as you think, SoccerDude.
For example, when in the Army you are asked to dig a hole "x" wide by "y" long by "z" deep on a very specific spot. The next day, you are asked to fill in that same hole so that it appears to have never been there. This exercise is not about digging holes, but about following orders to the letter without question.
The questions you were asked over the phone may not have been entirely about seeing if you knew the answers, but may also have been about seeing how you react to stress and whether you try to bullshit your way through tough questions or admit that you don't know the answers.
Google is a company that deals in factual information, so I'd imagine honesty and forthrightness are qualities they prize highly in their applicants.

Do you have your phone interviewer's physical address or email address? Send him a personal note thanking him for his time and to contact you if he has any more questions. It'll make you look more professional.

Thanks Trep, but I don't even know the guy's name, let alone his email address. The recruiter who usually talks to you is very different than the person who interviews you.

BTW, I think i'm starting to understand javascript a little, just not the whole math thing.

My friend's husband works for Google. Some of the perks they get are mind-boggling. :crazy:

Sorry to hear the interview didn't go well. :frown: Still, I've thought I totally bombed interviews before, and turned out to do well. You never know. *crosses fingers* :)

The company is really employee friendly. Besides the obvious stock options (which are sizzling right now), you never need to worry about buying food again, because they offer you breakfast, lunch and dinner (which I've never heard of in any other company). Other cool stuff is that you do not work in a "group" but rather you just work on the next project, so you never get bored. You don't get hired to do something specific, but whatever comes up. And they have a whole big ass huge white board, where people don't write actual work on it, but it's rather like a graffiti place where everyone can draw what they want. (Like a graffiti for nerds :D )
