Fat Man Walking

Just too many weird stories on the BBC tonight.

Has this guy got much press in the US

http://www.thefatmanwalking.com/

Started off at 30 stone and decides to walk coast to coast. He's currently in West Virginia and weighs 22 stone.

He Must be Mad.

Good on him. I wish him well :).

I have to look this up every time I see it (because it never sticks) -

1 stone = 14 pounds

So he started at 420 pounds and is now down to 308. :)

It's the exact weight of a stone that weighs 14 pounds :)

Dasilva 04-04-2006 02:05 PM

Lol, odd way to lose weight, but good for him.

Melanie68 04-04-2006 04:30 PM

He's like a slow Forrest Gump*. :D

Also 1 stone = 6.35029318 kilograms

*and I hadn't heard of him before but I haven't been watching Today or Good Morning America lately where they'd be most likely to feature him. :)

jjacob 04-04-2006 04:59 PM

Let's see, what famous movie springs to mind? :P

A friend of mine in the States and her sister biked all the way from NY to LA a couple of years ago, in 6 months no less! (not that they were in a hurry, that'd be a shame of a trip). I think I'm going to do that one day - well that or just buy a crapcar for $1000 and sell it when I arrive at my destination :D

Intrepid Homoludens 04-04-2006 05:02 PM

Right. A walking fat gathers no stones.

jjacob 04-04-2006 05:16 PM

-old chinese proverb say :D

That guy is awesome! 110 pounds?!

Jatsie 05-10-2006 04:17 AM

This guy was on the news today, he finally finished his walk, however his wife got so pissed off with him being away from home for over a year, she is now divorcing him, hehe.

NcroManiac 05-10-2006 05:36 AM

He didn't tell his wife he was going? o_O

I understand why she wants a divorce! :)

Sage 05-10-2006 08:27 AM

Good for him!
His wife might not be divorcing him for the reason you think, though. There is a syndrome where a person wants to have someone totally dependent on them, and one of the easiest ways to indulge this syndrome is by feeding a mate or child until they're unable to leave the house or take care of themselves. That's how these "Jerry Springer" favorites who weigh absurd amounts and haven't been out of bed in years get into the state they're in...if they're eating a carton of eggs every morning for breakfast, someone has to be feeding them.
By taking the walk to lose weight, the man in the story attempted to break away from this syndrome.

Melanie68 05-10-2006 08:36 AM

I heard some DJs on the radio complaining that he walked about 3000 miles and he only lost 105 pounds and he ate fast food instead of healthy food. That just pissed me off. :( Maybe he could have lost more but that is one hell of an accomplishment. I'd like to see those DJs get off their sorry asses and walk that long.

Maquisard 05-10-2006 11:41 AM

They're probably lean enough, so they don't have to. :P

Intrepid Homoludens 05-10-2006 11:50 AM

:P Yeah, but lean doesn't necessarily equal healthy, either.

What is this called? I feel a sudden urge to read up about it.
