Of course, without Tolkien, there would have been no Jordan, so...
That is a matter of opinion.

Yes, of course, but then again, it was on purpose, seing how the originial statement was affirmative.
My arguments in favour of Jordan would be: interesting bad guys, more adult themes, fewer cliches (but some nonetheless), more women, a lot more of adventuring and a lot less of travelling, fewer hobbits, orcs and elves.
And many others...

You have to remember that all those things that you call clichés were invented by Tolkien and then done to death in the last 40 years.

I agree that Whell of Time was a good series to begin with, but then it really spun out of control after book five or something... I simply had to stop reading, the material got so horribly, horribly stretched out....

You took the words right out of my mouth, Garyos. Path of Daggers was the last one I bought and I gave up halfway through that. I just couldn't take anymore. But the first few books were highly enjoyable, as one by one Rand dealt with the Forsaken. I didn't even mind that it was essentially Dune meets LotR. But as Jordan lost focus on Rand and spent more and more empty verbiage spinning out the dull intrigue of the Aes Sedai (Bene Gesserit) it became more like homework than reading for pleasure.

Er, what are those things I'm calling cliches?

I love all the books, but I see what you mean. The book next to Path of Daggers was quite good (I mean a lot of things happend), but the one after (the last book so far) was incredibly void of action.

Elves and hobbits, orcs and magical rings, ents, goblins and the situations in a modern adventure tale. These things have been inspired by the Norse myth, but the treatment is Tolkien's. Also, his writing style is far better than that of most paperback fantasy writers and some 'great writers' (if Joseph Conrad's works that are rife with horrible, just horrible figurative language and a downright annoying narrative voice can be regarded as great literature, so can The Lord of the Rings).
