Consider the issue closed... and yeah, I'll follow your advice too.

Hmmm...it's hard to fight battles when I'm not available. Been out of town all weekend and just got home. Anyway, I disagree that Touch of Evil's tracking shot has been bested. Maybe equalled, but not surpassed. I love Scorsese's shot in Goodfellas (Snake Eyes, no thanks), but it's not quite as complex. Bottom line: I believe filmmaking hasn't really changed all that much. I gave you a bunch of examples, and you didn't really tell me why they're dated...or why they're less impressive than stuff made today.

I dunno, just difference of opinion, I guess. Plus I obviously haven't seen as many films as you.

I loved Snake Eyes, it made a huge impression on me, visually. But perhaps that's just because I was hypnotised by the main actress... (Gina Gugino, I think)

Carla Gugino. Yeah, she can look pretty damn good. I was "hypnotised" by her in Sin City.

Also, I forgot one of the better shots like that from the 90's. The opening sequence of Robert Altman's The Player. Good stuff.

I usually have troubles getting into Altman's movies (I hated doctor T, for example), but the Player is sweet. Did someone say immoral?

It's a likeable film, but still a huge disappointment considering his other work.

It's the first of his movies that I've seen, so I couldn't possibly have been disappointed. But at least I know I liked it a lot, more so than Doctor T, Cookie's Fortune (that's him, right?), and even Gosford Park (although that's debatable).
But as I said, among all the Altman's movie that I saw, The Player stands out.

I keep missing The Player every time it's on telly. It's frigging annoying!

Gosford Park - nice study of ye olde English Manor life, no plot. It was "OK". The story felt thrown in, I actually could've done without it.

Catch it sometime! It's pretty cool. My favorite Altman's though are probably Nashville and Short Cuts though. As for Gosford Park, it's way too much of a rip off of The Rules of the Game, and about 1/50th as good.
