Default Raimi to direct a Discworld movie

This will be the follow up to Spider-man 3.

Wee Free Men...I read somewhere that that's one of the middle DW books. I wouldn't know, though. If that link breaks...I got it from here:

Theoretically, Wee Free Men is a young adult book, but I enjoyed it quite a bit

Army of Darkness. At least, I think he did that one...

I haven't read Wee Free Men, but it features "6-inch-tall blue-faced rowdies". Army of Darkness had a bunch of little Ashes running around torturing big Ash. I can see why it appeals so much to Sam Raimi.

Could it be? We're finally getting a Discworld movie?

How recent is Wee Free Men? I don't think I've read it yet...

I hope Rincewind will be in the movie... And the Librarian...

It came out last year I believe. [Er, or was that the year before?] It is fairly recent, though. It's not really my prime choice for a Discworld movie, though.

Wee Free Men has new characters, except a brief cameo by Granny Weatherwax.

Personally, I'd rather see it become a movie. It's a simpler story than most of the older books, and I think it'd lend itself well to a screenplay. More complex stories like, say, the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy don't always make good movies because stuff has to be cut for pacing or time or budget reasons.

So we should make concessions because movies are an inferior form of story telling? Pffffft!

There are already stage versions of a few of Pratchett's other Discworld books, like Wyrd Sisters, Mort, and Guards! Guards!

And I've seen the cartoon versions of Wyrd Sisters and Soul Music. Those worked well enough in terms of compressing the story and still being decent (in my opinion).

Of course, a "young adult" book like Wee Free Men probably has more appeal to younger audiences (and older ones as well). Like Harry Potter or something.

Yeah, but the BBC animated versions were 6 hours long.

Not so fast, my friend! I'm looking at the DVD cases now and unless the US release got heavily edited versions, it says Wyrd Sisters has a run time of 140 minutes (2 hrs 20 minutes) and Soul Music has a run time 175 minutes (about 3 hours).

But, if you add them together, you'd get about five and half hours. Why would you do that, though? Why, I ask? Why???

The entire Evil Dead trilogy for me, although I can't decide on which of the first two I prefer. A Simple Plan, Darkman, and The Quick and the Dead are good, too. He also had a hand in writing The Hudsucker Proxy which is one of my all time favorites.

Possibly I remembered wrong, then. Haven't watched them in awhile. But that's still a lot longer than your average film, even at 140 minutes (and especially at 175 minutes).

That's not to say that I wouldn't like to see a (good) film adaptation of some other Discworld stuff. I think Night Watch would make an amazing movie. But I don't think it could be done well without sacrificing some of the fairly intricate story.

Night watch would make a good movie, I think Clint Eastwood would be great as Sam Vimes

Didnt Wee Three Men have a follow up book? hat in the skye or something like that?

I would have prefered a movie based on the Rincewind saga, there could have been a movie for each book

Ohh, Wee Free Men is on paperback, I'm gonna order it right now!

It's a shame nine of the favorites are in there, is it me, or do all his recent books have more new characters than old?

I remember Pratchett dropping some hints about a Discworld movie when he spoke to the OU last term, so it doesn't surprise me that much.

I want to see this one .

Read it, liked it. It might be a notch below the previous ones (I liked Going Postal more, for example), but it's still very good.
