Default Brains - Zombie movies

So Mares got me thinking in the other movie thread.

What exactly is the best Zombie movie ever made.

My personal faves

Dawn of the Dead (1979 and 2004)
Night of the Living Dead
Day of the Dead
Shaun of the Dead
Re-animator
Bride of the Re-animator
Braindead
Zombie Flesh Eaters
28 Days Later

But which one is best.

28 days later, with Shaun of the Dead a close second. Brits know their brains.

I got into them with Resident Evil, and went on to watch the Dawn of the Dead remake and other modern zombie flicks. I'm a recent fan, and haven't seen most of the "classics" myself. BTW, why isn't Romero's Land of the Dead on the list?

Edit: OK, so there's "other", forget I asked.

1. I'm horribly lazy about watching movies (even those out on DVD). The fact I saw 2, count them 2, movies in the theater over Chrismas vacation is an incredible accomplishment for me.

2. I couldn't watch any of those movies by myself so I need to con some friends into watching them with me which I haven't done.

I have a weird love/hate fascination with horror movies. I get a thrill out of the frisson of terror I get just reading about the movies, but can rarely buck up the courage to see them. Having said that, I've only seen Dawn of the Dead and 28 Days Later.

I saw Dawn of the Dead at my Dad's friend's house. His friend was a horror freak and had a whole shelf full of horror VHS tapes. I was probably too young to have seen that movie, and I don't remember liking it at the time.

I saw 28 Days Later with my hubby and thought it was a good scare. It was cool to see a different take on zombies -- fast-moving frenetic ones that are much harder to evade. And I loved the opening scenes of emptiness -- so creepy. But, there were some cringe-inducing scenes that left me feeling sick to my stomach.

I've seen about half of the films listed (unless you count the enormous number of films that "Other" includes. ) and my favourite is Shaun of the Dead. Partly its because I like the way humour and horror have been mixed together. Partly because I'm a big Simon Pegg fan. (Anyone here seen Spaced?)

The remake of Dawn of the Dead was very well done. In a way the whole thing is more scary because, instead of the slowly shambling zombies of the past, these zombies can really move. Much more frightening to be faced by something you can't outrun with a brisk stroll.

As an aside, did people watch the closing titles for the remake. Might have missed out on some significant extra footage if you didn't.

My vote goes to Braindead, it's just soooo much fun (as opposed to Bad Taste which is a bit of a bore). I'd like to make a zombie movie myself one day, it annoys the hell out of me how people in those films always do the most stupid things. I'd like to see a realistic zombie flick for a change. Yeah, I know that last sentence is quite an oxymoron.

Or maybe not.

Anyway, I saw Night of the Comet just the other day. It's a cute 80s flick, similar in tone to Cherry 2000 and just as fun. It doesn't have real zombies, but many "zombie" movies don't either. I recommend it to every fan of 80s cheesiness.

I voted "Other" because I've only seen the original b&w "Night of the Living Dead", and I wasn't much impressed.

^ What he said! Anyone who can't outrun the classically slow-paced zombies of yore deserves to have their brains eaten.
That being said, the remake of "Dawn of the Dead" shows promise, and I'll have to check it out. A zombie flick with zombies that can actually move might save the screenwriters the embarassment of resorting to hackneyed plot devices like a heroine who trips and twists her ankle while being pursued by slow-moving zombies.

Alas, there are other hackneyed plot devices and people are still as stupid and unorganized as ever. Which might not be that bad, actually. In the end, Romero's zombie movies are all about people and their inability to coexist, even under life-threatening circumstances.

I used to be a big horror movie junkie when I was a teenager, so I've seen every damn one of these movies. Heh. I voted for the original Dawn of the Dead (which was 1978 by the way, not 1968...'68 was Night of the Living Dead). Dawn of the Dead is pretty much the perfect zombie movie. It's quite deep in terms of the social commentary (particularly for a horror film), it has plenty of gore and exciting set pieces, a wonderful setting, likeable characters, and a sense of humor.

I love all of Romero's zombie saga (especially the first three), but Dawn is just the ultimate. The Dawn remake is good for what it is, but it doesn't have the depth and characterization of the original. Now to compliment some of the others... Re-Animator and Shaun of the Dead are great fun for zombie fans, I had a blast during both. Then there's Braindead, certainly the goriest movie ever made and arguably one of the funniest as well. Braindead is possibly the most fun zombie movie ever made.

But 28 Days Later = overrated. Sorry.

I had to pick Braindead cos I've seen that film so many times and it still makes me laugh and cringe. For serious zombie flicks, 28 days later and Dawn of the dead (original), although the original Night of... was great too. Shaun of the dead is quality too, just got Spaced and its the best thing ever.
