Default Oh my sweet lappy...

No more computer and internets for me much for a while it seems. Looks like the video card on my laptop has died. Or something has died. Pity the machines not under warranty anymore. I hope they can fix... THIS:

Maybe Trep will lend me his shiny new laptop in the meantime...

Maybe he can't and won't. Sorry.

Ummmm, how old is your laptop? Is it possible to replace the graphics card or is it integrated? You might just have to get a whole new system.

No? Maybe you'll share one of those cocktails with me...

It's 14 months old, but it's a mighty fine machine! These sort of machine are still selling for about $2,500 in shops here. I just spoke to NEC on the phone, and they reckon they can fix it. Of course, I have to pay them $110 just to look at it. It has it's own graphics card, so I guess maybe they can replace that... as long as it doesn't cost too much.

Meanwhile, I can get reacquainted with an old friend... fresh air and sunlight!

Ouch! But it's good to hear that it's fixable.

Laptop components sometimes cost about as much as a new laptop. I think a screen might be on of the components too expensive to replace. RAM and the hard drive are the only things I think are easily replaceable.

Aye, 'tis true.

Thing is, there is a company that deals in used laptops that is willing to give me $1200 store credit for a trade-in for my laptop, so I figure its worth looking into getting it repaired myself.

I'm willing to spend up to about $400 to get this fixed. Not because I can afford that, but because thats around about the range where its still cost effective and cheaper to repair it rather than get a new one.

I'm hoping graphics cards can be replaced... and also hoping its not a motherboard issue.

Graphics cards on laptops are built into the motherboard, like onboard gpu's in chipsets in desktops. Of course, the onboard gpus in desktops are for budget, while laptops can contain expensive ones.

I'm guessing it's a LCD issue, and it's probably going to involve screen replacement. It probably needs a professional to do, and it's going to involve getting the right screen and getting to work in a proprietary case and with proprietary components.

You're probably looking at $400-600 to get it replaced if it's a 14.1/15.1 screen.

Step one: Throw laptop in bin.

Step Two: Go to online computer store, buy PC.

or

Step Three (optional): Build your own PC (it works out cheaper.)

Step Four: Use and enjoy a proper PC that can be upgradable unlike a laptop.

Cue credits...

I don't think it's anything like this. Pretty certain it is hardware issue. Tried soem different drivers, still had the issue.

I discovered that this only happens when running on AC, doesnt' happen on battery. Also, if I manually lower the core and memory clock of the graphics card, then it doesn't happen. (That is, that used to work... and I think doing this and still playing games made it worse )

I'm doomed.
