Some people just don't get it. He may not be racist at all--some people just forward everything they get.

My uncle sent me a racist joke last year. I know he's not truly bigoted, so I let it go.

The following week, we had dinner and he was complaining about how one of his black work comrades asked him not to send racist emails. I tried to clue him in to the fact that a) you don't send racist jokes about blacks to a black person and b) you certainly don't do it at work.

He continued to forward on everything. What'a'ya gonna do?

I've never understood the crap-forwarding phenomenon either...I would be too embarrassed to forward anything racist or tasteless, because like it or not, one is defined by the choices one makes. I don't even like the inoffensive, pointless stuff-- the endless top ten lists and so on. Such a waste of time. But...getting back on topic, in my opinion, there is no good reason to pass on nasty jokes. The cartoon at the beginning of this forum is wrong in so many ways...also I find that some of the discussion afterward is a bit patronizing- as if incorrect speech is a "black problem" because "they" don't have good schools. Coming from a Louisiana creole culture myself, where a very "incorrect" 17th century dialect of French mixed with African and Spanish is spoken, I wish people would open their minds a little and recognize that this is how language dialects evolve. While I don't necessarily think that colloquial dialects should be taught in school, or used on forums where others wont understand, I don't think they should be ridiculed either. Also, there is a difference between bad spelling and grammar, and dialect. Many African-Americans speak an officially recognized dialect of English. So what? Jamaicans do too. I find nothing amusing about the drawing either- it tells far more about the person who drew it than it does about anything else. Also, the stereotype in the text is the same old crud about all blacks being violent hoodlums. I am so sick of this stuff.

The jokes themselves don't really bother me. They aren't the least bit funny, mind you, and I can't say that I take offense to them personally. It's people who forward useless shit like this that offend me. There's nothing I hate more than opening my mailbox and seeing that a friend has sent me some crap that he himself probably didn't bother looking at. Thankfully, my friends aren't that annoying.
