Here's an American parartrooper song for ya, Robbo, which will be recognised by those of you who watched "Band of Brothers":

"Blood upon the Risers" (sang to the tune of Battle Hymn of the Republic)

"Is everybody happy?" cried the Sergeant, looking
up
Our hero feebly answered "Yes" and then they
stood him up.
He leaped right out into the blast, his static line
unhooked.
He ain't gonna jump no more.
(chorus)

He counted long, he counted loud,he waited for
the shock;
He felt the wind, he felt the clouds, he felt the
awful drop;
He jerked his chord, the silk spilled out and
wrapped around his legs.
He ain't gonna jump no more.
(chorus)

The risers wrapped around his neck, connectors
cracked his dome.
The lines were snarled and tied in knots, around his skinny
bones
The canopy became his shroud, he hurtled to the
ground
He ain't gonna jump no more
(chorus)

The days he'd lived and loved and laughed kept
running through his mind;
He though about the girl back home, the
one he left behind;
He thought about the medics and wondered what
they'd find.
He ain't gonna jump no more
(chorus)

The ambulance was on the spot, the jeeps were
running wild;
The medics jumped and screamed with glee, they
rolled their sleeves and smiled;
For it had been a week or more since last a chute
had failed;
He ain't gonna jump no more.
(chorus)

He hit the ground, the sound was splat, his blood
went spurting high;
His comrades then were heard to say "A helluva
way to die";
He lay there rolling 'round in the welter of his
gore
He ain't gonna jump no more.
(chorus)

There was blood upon the risers, there were brains
upon the chute;
Intestines were a-dangling from this paratrooper's
boots;
They picked him up, still in his chute, and poured
him from his boots;
He ain't gonna jump no more.
(chorus)

CHORUS
Gory, gory, what a helluva way to die
Gory, gory, what a helluva way to die
Gory, gory, what a helluva way to die
He ain't gonna jump no more.

Now we're talking! That would make the journey really pleasant. I actually like opera and it's been ages since I last went to see one. Hrm....Carmen or The Magic Flute are two great options.

No, no no you got it all wrong! It's the thread that you should try to kill. I just want some opera.

High-pitched opera can kill anything.

The Queen of the night aria from The Magic Flute. Singing bass myself I get so impressed by anyone who actually can sing those keys in tune.

Never been to an opera, the stuff just sounds like it's going to burst my eardrums.

I don't listen to it on a regular basis, but I have been to quite a number of operas in my life and enjoyed the experience. Although I have to admit I always fall asleep a short while somewhere in the middle of it. As a matter of fact I've seen plenty of others in the audience taking a nap.

You don't mean that, surely? Alto or Tenor at the lowest...

And I don't mind Sinatra, as unfashionable as that might be.

Well I'm talking about the barbershop female bass. I don't know what that would be compared to in classical music. On a good day I can take a low C (I'm not good at naming the keys in English.). I mean the C that's to the left of the 'middle' C on the piano keyboard. *hopes you understand*

A good day is often the day after a lot of singing. So if we give concerts two days in a row I can take the lowest keys even better on day two.

I also should say that I'm not singing with the chorus this year. I'm taking a break.

EDIT: Who cares about being fashionable btw?

I loved "The Magic Flute" version performed by the Augsburger Puppenkiste. The Augsburger Puppenkiste is a well known German marionette stage, which has been an essential part of my childhood. They didn't sing the real arias though, but rather they were singing simplified speech-singing.

Here's some pictures of "The Magic Flute":

Tamino and Pamina

Papageno and Papagena

Zarasthro

The DVD cover - They called it "Eine Kleine Zauberflöte"/"A(/The) Small Magic Flute"

Hmmm. Good point.

Still, a lecture of military tactics is really more of my cup of tea.

When I worked in Stockholm the schools were invited a couple of times to one opera house who made children's versions of some of the operas they performed. First the lead singers came to visit the school, telling about the story and also sang some, and the kids also got to learn a tune. The children's version wasn't longer than an hour and ended with the tune that the kids had learned so they got to sing along (In the Magic Flute it was of course Papageno's song). Isn't that a great way to present the opera genre?

Hrm, this might have scared some people off the thread when I think of it.

Heyy I wanna play the bouncer in that one.

The only problem is when I sing all that comes out is something on the lines of Lyle Lovette with a head cold.. or Randy Travis, about the same thing

What I love about opera is the happy endings?

Aida.
Tosca
Madam Butterfly.

All very jolly stuff.
