The Pope doesn't look like Palpitine. Everybody was just high off the Star Wars phenom at the time.

Like when the Enola Gay was in the news and soon every school's mascot was the bombers.

Of course he doesn't look like Palpatine. He's Darth Papa, after all.

Of course, that was John Paul II. "Papa Ratzi" (as a friend called him) is just...the sequel. And we will never know who he is, because Mr. Lucas doesn't plan on making the last three movies.
