I hope things in Iran can change for the better.

I wonder what the world would be like if religion didn't exist.

Yeah. Extended family (e.g. great aunts and uncles) that I don't see very often (and in some cases, not at all) but family nevertheless. Plus, it's heartbreaking to know that even though myself, my immediate family, aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandmother are safe in Canada, so many others just like us aren't as fortunate.

Well, we have no way of telling for sure, but it likely wouldn't be the kind of utopia that John Lennon imagined in that song. Those power-hungry bigots hurting people in the name of religion right now would likely find some other excuse to hurt people. (See also communism.)

I would disagree, actually. There certainly are people who use excuses like religion to oppress and persecute, but the people in question genuinely believe what they're teaching. It's not just an excuse to them. I think if the poison of hatred that is fundamentalist religion (on the level it is in Iran) had never been invented in the first place, the people who now rally behind it would be nothing like what they've become through their beliefs. They might even be open-minded, reasonable people. Who knows.

Are you arguing against religion, or are you arguing against fundamentalism?

Well, both, but I'm not entirely opposed to a spiritualistic worldview if it's within reason. There's nothing wrong with believing there's a benevolent creator, as long as you leave out the bits created by fear and ignorance. If you do leave those bits out, it stops being religion and is just more of a hopeful outlook on life. Assuming you don't let it dictate your actions and thoughts, which is the real kicker.

I suppose that what I mean by "What would the world be like if religion didn't exist?" is "What would society be like if we humans didn't believe in the same (if evolved and developed) set of beliefs our ancestors used to describe the terrifying and unknown world outside, as they huddled in ignorance in a cave, scrawling on the walls with charcoal?" Or something, yeah.

But anyway, the Iranian government is clearly a fundamentalist institution.

We'd find something else to believe in instead (which many people already do, for that matter) because attempting to describe the terrifying and unknown world outside seems to be something we just can't stop doing, no matter how circumstances change.

What Steve Martin Believes in

I believe in rainbows and puppy dogs and fairy tales.

And I believe in the family - Mom and Dad and Grandma.. and Uncle Tom, who waves his penis.

And I believe 8 of the 10 Commandments.

And I believe in going to church every Sunday, unless there's a game on.

And I believe that sex is one of the most beautiful, wholesome and natural things.. that money can buy.

And I believe it's derogatory to refer to a woman's breasts as "boobs", "jugs", "winnebagos" or "golden bozos".. and that you should only refer to them as "hooters".

And I believe you should put a woman on a pedestal.. high enough so you can look up her dress.

And I believe in equality, equality for everyone.. no matter how stupid they are, or how much better I am than they are.

And, people say I'm crazy for believing this, but I believe that robots are stealing my luggage.

And I believe I made a mistake when I bought a 30-story 1-bedroom apartment.

And I believe the Battle of the Network Stars should be fought with guns.

And I believe that Ronald Reagan can make this country what it once was - an arctic region covered with ice.

And, lastly, I believe that of all the evils on this earth, there is nothing worse than the music you're listening to right now. That's what I believe.

We'll be right back

Into the future cybertron
Harder, faster, better, stronger
Sexy ladies extra longer, cuz
We got the beat that bounce
We got the beat that pow
We got the beat that 808
That the boom boom in your town
