Hey, I just got an acceptance letter from one of the better schools in the Midwestern United States, Berea College here in Kentucky.
Which, frankly, is fairly surprising, given that my preparation for my application there was lacking. In fact, I didn't even prepare for the school. |

Congrats Gil! Are you planning on accepting or do you have other choices you'd rather choose?

Thanks. I actually do have another choice, Knox College up north. A few friends are going there and have invited me. It's actually also one of the best schools in the Midwest, even better than Berea. Unfortunately, there's two downsides to it: first, I have to RSVP at Berea within the next week because there's only 400 spots in the class I'm applying to, and because of the troubles with the Common Application, I won't have heard back from Knox by then, and 2: Knox costs $40,000 yearly, as opposed to Berea which is, unbelievably, free to attend beyond fees. (That's also why Berea has an incredibly low acceptance rate, even for private schools; everyone wants to go to a school that's in US News And World Report's top 50 American liberal arts schools and free.)
So it will probably be Berea. I've been accepted into their physics program. Fuck. I'm going to have to take a crash course in physics before August. Anyone, uh... know any good books on the subject? |

OMG!
Reading sums like that makes me so happy I live in a country where all universities are free of charge. Talk about excluding lots of bright young men and women just because their parents can't afford crazy money like that. Sorry for the rant Gil. A crash course in physics sounds

Yeah, the money thing can be pretty overwhelming. It'd be great to have a system like what you have in Sweden.
I'd love to hire a tutor, but unfortunately it would be a little bit over the budget. That, and I'm not sure I could find one in my area. I'll scrape by, somehow. If nothing else, I've got Wikipedia. |

What level of Physics text book are you looking for? I'm sure I could pester someone who was doing physics when I was at university to see if they have any ideas...

Would you? That'd be great. Many thanks.
If this acquaintance of yours knows of any books that are suited to, say, college freshman-level academics, that would be great. Anyting beyond would be too advanced, of course, but on the other hand, I'd like to avoid lesser-level books that won't prepare for Berea College's notoriously difficult curriculum. |

But hey, how can Christmas eve not be an important part of Christmas to some (or most)? At least here (as far as I know) Christmas eve is when most of the presents are given... |
