In another example of the brilliant usefulness of dial-up internet, or lack thereof, no matter how many times I hit the "post" button when thanking friends on Facebook for wishing me a happy birthday, nothing happens. Piece of shit.

In my experience it's Facebook rather than dialup that's your problem there. Facebook is slower than molasses on a snail in the antarctic.
