You know, I have to disagree with some of this. I find that most women do not get all dolled up for men as much as they do for other women. Something in most (butt not all, CYA) of these women look at other women as competition for some reason.
The reason I say this is that most of the stylish shoes, dresses, and so forth have nothing to do with what men like. In fact, most men think women look best in a minimal amount of clothing.

Well, as I said, it was a very crude, simplistic way of putting it. Yes, the opinions of other women are a factor; goodness knows I've felt my share of pressure on that end too. But then, one has to ask, where did these women get such standards from in the first place, anyway?

Sad but true.

My wife isn't a great shoe/clothes buyer. It would waste her book buying money. AS far as I'm concerned she still looks gorgeous.

What I do do, though, is to refuse to accept the suggestion that I'm not ugly. That I have an obsession with. Because I like people to be honest.

I was always honest when I said you were not ugly. Why don't you believe me?!

Let me tell it to you again: You. Are. Not. Ugly.

I do not believe in lying to people so that they feel better. Lying never helps.

If it's an honest opinion you're after Rob then here's one.

You are not a man that will make women swoon, either through lust or horror. You're a very normal-looking average sort of guy, neither Brad Pitt or Shrek. If you haven't changed your hairstyle much since the picture I saw or you then you've got a style that suits you (you don't have a shaggy shoulder-length or ponytail sort of face). I think were you to grow a beard you might look a bit odd (as I recall your hair is quite light and beards really need to be dark to contrast against the skin) As long as you look after yourself in both hygiene and diet then you're doing fine.

I prescribe a dose of How to Look Good Naked. If only there was a male equivalent program we could send you on. Maybe Wok Gan would be able to convince you.

And here are my two cents:
You'll probably meet a girl one day who is a normal looking average sort of gal. That's the case for most of us (and certainly for me and Mr J).

One small observation I've done through the years is that a lot of people around me (friends, acquaintacies) that were considered really good looking when they were in your (Rob's)age ended up meeting others that were really good looking. Today though, they're all divorced since they've met new really good looking people or their spouce met someone new really good looking.

I don't draw any general conclusions from this observation. It probably just applies to these people.

And all of us average normal looking people are happliy married.
Go figure!

Shouldn't that be your two öre?

Let's face it. If this world contains a woman willing to marry a bearded accountant with appalling taste in shirts (8 years and counting. A former colleague has described the intervening period as "a lapse of concentration" on her part) then there is someone out there for everybody.

No Wok Gan is the (imagined) female equivalent of Gok Wan. She presents the (as yet fictional) male version of "How to Look Good Naked"

(Originally I had her down as Nag Kow but that sounded wrong. )

Handsome is overrated. Reflexes are what really count when it comes down to the nitty-gritty.

Are you saying that it's impossible to beat back a horde or ravening monsters intent on tearing you limb from limb by being handsome at them?

I think that really depends on what you mean by "a horde or ravening monsters".

It would be a terrible idea to face down a horde or ravenous monsters with anything short of a SIG 550 with a tripled clip and electro-optical sights. Both of which are features which the 550 supports.
