Watterson has commented a couple of times on Hobbes.

He said

"When Hobbes is a stuffed toy in one panel and alive in the next, I'm juxtaposing the "grown-up" version of reality with Calvin's version, and inviting the reader to decide which is truer."

""Hobbes is more about the subjective nature of reality than dolls coming to life": thus there is no concrete definition of Hobbes' reality. Watterson explained: "Calvin sees Hobbes one way, and everyone else sees Hobbes another way." Hobbes' reality is in the eye of the beholder."

When the baby raccoon Calvin finds in the woods dies, Calvin's mother is seen mourning the raccoon's passing with Hobbes (in stuffed animal form), then commenting on how broken up she must be to do so;
At least once reference is made to Hobbes having to go through the washer and dryer occasionally, and to the effect that this has on Hobbes;
And finally, in one strip Hobbes gets a rip from Calvin's rough-housing which has to be sewn up by Calvin's mother.

That only establishes that everyone else views him as a stuffed animal, not that he is a stuffed animal.

Remember reality is what we percieve it to be.

I've always preferred Philip K Dick's definition

Funny thing to say for a man who believed that a demon has had the world stuck into a Matrix-like VR loop for the past 2000 years.

There is a Calvin and Hobbes article at Slate.com. Be sure to click the link of the slide show essay at the end.

To reopen this long-dead dehate.

All last week the subject of Frazz was a game called Bedlamball.

It had no discernible rules?

Sound familiar

Yea, looking at the color one on the comics.com, I see what you're saying. That uncolored one mel posted was too similar.

Is this guy just trying to gain notoriety by raising a debate about its similarities to Calvin & Hobbes? I mean, his characters look similar in style and now it looks like he's even directly referencing Calvinball. It seems like a cheap way to get public attention, if that is what he's doing. (Unless he is Watterson in disguise, of course, which I'll assume he isn't).

It could just be a publicity stunt.

On the other hand I find Frazz very funny more often than not so there isn't really a need to go for cheap publicity.

Maybe its just an inspired "what if" homage.

Or maybe its just an astoundingly spooky coincedence due to the random nature of the universe.
