Default RIP Rosa Parks

On the surface, it might seem funny that one of the American women whom I respect the most is a seamstress with a criminal record. That is until I tell you that her name is Rosa Parks. Rosa Parks changed the world that we all live in forever by refusing to give up her seat on the bus to a white man, something that is so simple yet required an enormous amount of courage. She not only sparked the movement that challenged the segregation and jump started the Civil Rights movement in America but also taught all of us the power of peaceful civil disobedience and how the people banded together for a common purpose could actually change the world for better.

Rosa Parks, mother of the civil right movement, a simple yet great American died yesterday at 92. In 2002, at a celebration to honor her she said:

"I am leaving this legacy to all of you ... to bring peace, justice, equality, love and a fulfillment of what our lives should be. Without vision, the people will perish, and without courage and inspiration, dreams will die — the dream of freedom and peace."

RIP Rosa Parks, as a prominent black politician said, you stood up by sitting down, I'm only standing here because of you.

I've read about her. It's sad to see someone like this die.

Everybody dies sometime. (and 92 isn't bad)

Still sad though

92 is a very good age, but then again when you reach 80, theres not much you can do besides wait until you die.

There are people within the AG community around that age who'd vehemently disagree with that.

Spitfire - do a search on the member Len Green. He's in his 80's, and still does write-ups and walkthroughs. He's a very active adventure gamer in the community!

I would think older member would be more active, because all the little ones are either in college, getting drunk or having sex.

When I get older Im bound to stay here. And all the other communities around me. If we all leave when we're old, there would be nothing left if we left the forums to the next generation. I could imagine my kids spaming...

A rose for you, Rosa. And thank you for your very humanistic act of bravery to do what you knew was right.

It's interesting, last night I was discussing to my best friend (who is also my niece) my personal experiences with racism within the gay world. Yes, contrary to what we all think, the rainbow flag is an illusion, it's not for all colours in practice. For one thing racism against us gay asians and lesbians is quite rampant, and I have been victimized myself. I've been treated as a fetish object, discriminated against, and asked insulting questions that perpetuate stereotypes of people like me. And I've had to deal with them again and again. And now, someone who I love so dearly and intimately is revealing a streak of racism to me as well in how he treats me and other asians. It's so painful, seeing how bigotry, hatred, and plain ignorance can be so deep seated in people.

But as with Rosa Parks, who I consider my hero and ally, I can only endure my mistreatment with the hope that one day no one will ever have to go through what I'm going through. We're all heroes inside, really. And people like Rosa remind me that. That I am a hero and that I can endure and champion and sustain a strong sense of hope. That I am a good person has nothing to do with the colour of my skin.

She is a pretty big inspiration. I never knew I could save the world by not moving my ass on a bus.

You'd be amazed at what you can accomplish by simply being stressed out tired after a very long day at work.

Well, she's dead, so I won't comment on that.

She is famous because the incident was perfect for a test case, and of course she was a member of an organisation called the NAACP. I'm not a fan of building up folk heroes for political agendas. Aren't the people who protested before her but didn't get as much publicity just as righteous?

Civil disobedience might have been named (that's great in it's own right) in America by an American, but it was not in the 20th century, and the tactic was used many times, well before then.

I'm not so sure whether she instigated the lawsuit against Outkast, it's not consistant with her attitude of modesty and correcting the rumours with her true account. Such as being physically tired, was possibly a misquote, she remembers being tired of discrimination, making the motive of staying in the seat much more noble than laziness. This attitude is the thing I'm going to remember, I don't like heroines much, normal honest people can do incredible things.

Yeah, I mean there have been people who died for doing what she did, and do we know their names? Nope.
