Default Bob Dylan (if you hate Bob, don't read)

On September 26 and 27, PBS will be showing the Martin Scorsese documentary No Direction Home. This will also be on the BBC Two's Arena Series on the same days.

Also, he will be touring Europe.

Like I said, if you hate Bob, fine. Just don't bash him. Ignore the thread instead.

Thanks!!!

EDIT: This link is even better.

Bob Dylan is a ove him or hate him type artist and I must say I adore him. His songwriting abilities are second to none.

Some people do (poor misguided souls)

Including Charlotte Church

A friend took me to see Bob Dylan in concert for my 25th birthday. I was SO excited to see one on the greats, live & in person.

It was one of the absolute worst concerts I ever attended & after an hour or so, people were leaving in droves. He sang only one song; relying on his backup singers to to the rest. Pi-tee-full.

Who the f$%k? is Charlotte Church? What a spoiled brat! Admittedly, I know people who don't like Dylan's voice, too. But there's so much more.

Well it figures, he goes on tour to every place except Finland.

I'm sorry. The bum. He must not have listened to Monty Python...

Finland, Finland, Finland,
The country where I want to be,
Pony trekking or camping,
Or just watching TV.
Finland, Finland, Finland.
It's the country for me.

You're so near to Russia,
So far from Japan,
Quite a long way from Cairo,
Lots of miles from Vietnam.

Finland, Finland, Finland,
The country where I want to be,
Eating breakfast or dinner,
Or snack lunch in the hall.
Finland, Finland, Finland.
Finland has it all.

You're so sadly neglected
And often ignored,
A poor second to Belgium,
When going abroad.

Finland, Finland, Finland,
The country where I quite want to be,
Your mountains so lofty,
Your treetops so tall.
Finland, Finland, Finland.
Finland has it all.

Finland, Finland, Finland,
The country where I quite want to be,
Your mountains so lofty,
Your treetops so tall.
Finland, Finland, Finland.
Finland has it all.

Finland has it all.

(that was probably lame of me )

And smoking doesn't exactly do anything for your vocal cords either....

You should sing something and post it. I want to hear you

My tenor voice is rubbish. If it weren't illegal to do so, though, I'd rip a recorded solo from when I was a treble. I'm no longer at all proud of my voice; only my sight-reading.

I saw Dylan in Houston in 2002. It was at the Astrodome, but I got a pit bracelet through a lot of physical exertion (I ran arround the Astrodome looking for the sod who was giving those out), so I got to be right in front of the stage. He mainly sung the stuff from Love and Theft, and then some country songs.

I wanted him to play Desolation Row. It was awkward. I couldn't yell "Bob" or "Dylan" because he is neither a "Bob" nor a "Dylan"; you can't split his name but you can't scream "Hey, Bob Dylan!" at him either. So... between songs, I kept screaming, "Hey Zimmie, play Desolation Row!!"

He didn't.

It was an impractical request anyway.

The song is fifteen minutes long.

I just saw him last fall:

Davis, California
The Pavilion
October 18, 2004

1. To Be Alone With You
2. Señor (Tales Of Yankee Power)
3. Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum
4. Under The Red Sky
5. It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)
6. Moonlight
7. Cold Irons Bound
8. Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues
9. Man In The Long Black Coat
10. Highway 61 Revisited
11. Saving Grace
12. Honest With Me
13. Don't Think Twice, It's All Right
14. Summer Days

encore
15. Like A Rolling Stone
16. All Along The Watchtower

He played the keyboard all night (crouched over - and didn't appear to get tired). He rarely talked between songs. I didn't recognize many of the songs except for some of the last because he does them so differently each time. I was looking at his set lists. He does play Desolation Row once in a while (maybe he was in the right mood).

To anyone and everyone - favorite Album and/or song?

Mine - Blood on the Tracks/Simple Twist of Fate and Buckets of Rain.

Blonde On Blonde and I can't pick a favourite song. Oh all right — "Visions Of Johanna." For the moment.

No Direction Home has been on but I found this mp3 of Rodney Crowell talking about the influence of Bob Dylan on him personally.

http://www.xpn.org/mp3/Crowell%20process.mp3

One of the things that struck me was Rodney talking about hearing Bringing It All Back Home and listening to Subterranian Homesick Blues over and over again - putting the needle back on the start of the song. Hearing about actual albums (33 and a 1/3 rpm, vinyl!!) was nostalgic and made me feel a little old.

It's a great little clip to listen to.

It's so nice to know I'm not the only person who's irritated by that egregious practice.
I've seen many more female singers do it than males. Are natural vibratos less common in females?

Bob Dylan... what's it like? Can I have one serving, medium rare, and a lil burn at the sides?

The thing I love is that the vibrato you most commonly hear from old-fashioned opera singers is a result of them having to project their voice throughout an entire theatre above an orchestra. Miss Church's vibrato is added, given that she uses a microphone, purely because that's what opera is supposed to sound like (I happen to hate warbly singing, but hey!).

I always thought that vibrato was something that developed naturally as a result of singing a lot and building up the strength of your voice. And whilst it can be used to produce a rich tone, I do wonder why anyone ever feels the need to deliberately add it.
