Anna's Room

Anna's Room

Anna's Room is a short form, black comedy adventure game that's a dark fairy-tale like story inspired by The Brothers Grimm with a sci-fi twist. The story follows Anna, a young girl kept under lock and key in a deep, dark wood by an evil old woman who runs Anna through a series of tests and experiments. What she doesn't count on, however, are the powerful telekinetic forces brought up within Anna that opens up her first window of escape...

I plan to update this thread with better info when the game is closer to completion, but my impatience for feedback has led me here to post up a screen of what I've got this far. It's only to be a two room game, but the emphasis is on 2D art and the various animations given by Anna's psychic interaction with the room.

The screens are of the main room (concept and semi-completed room respectively), and the gif one of the walk cycles. The room, of course, will contain many more interactive 'things' before it's completion ;)

Wow, looks really nice!

Just out of interest, which game engine are you using to make this?

Sughly 04-15-2010 02:01 PM

Thanks Intense :D
Trying my hand at AGS, I've toyed with it before and hopelly have an understanding enough to use it for this. Anna's Room is pretty much a test of my capabilities before doing anything bigger. Thanks for the reply!

Intense Degree 04-16-2010 06:01 AM

AGS is pretty cool and quite easy to get the hang of. I've even managed a short game myself using it (several attempts but only one finished) but it was complete rubbish as my art skillz leave something to be desired!

Definitely looking forward to the completed product when you finish your game! :D

Let me know if you're looking for anyone to do some music for the game though as I might be able to assist.

Sughly 04-16-2010 05:34 PM

Yeah AGS does appear so far to be quite user friendly :D Thanks again for the support Intense, and a big thanks for the offer - I might end up taking you up on it if my other plans don't hold up ;)

Do you have a link to some of your work I could see (games and/or music)?

Oh wow, this sounds awesome! I love the look of the protagonist, and the first few lines about the plot hooked me already. A dark take on the Brothers' Grimm, I'm definetely there. Can't wait to see more and eventually play! Out of reference, have you seen/read any of the adult takes on fairy tales? I'm thinking of "10th Kingdom" when I ask this, etc.

Anyway, it looks really good, and I'm actually quite excited about this! Please let me know if there's anything I can do to help. :)

Thanks so much for the enthusiasm Fantasy!

Looking at 10th Kingdom I feel quite bad to say I haven't seen it, and would also say I probably have a much less grounded knowledge of the fantasy world in comparison to you :frown:. I'm really drawing inspiration from the very basic ideas behind the Grimm tales, using notions of their folk tale storytelling through character (evil stepmother-like woman, innocent child protagonist), the sense of fear that always pervades the protagonist's story, and even narration in intro and ending cinematics that hopefully represent that Grimm style. That being said, I do want to keep it light with black comedy and allow Anna to make light of the situation.

I think your help could be potentially huge through feedback on things like character, dialogue and setting as the game progresses too and I'd be sure to bounce ideas off you when I can. Thanks again Fantasy!

Looks good, and sounds interesting.

Looks awesome so far Sughly, i'll miss your thread if you're not posting about it from here http://www.adventuregamers.com/forum...ad.php?t=26852 ;)

keep us updated :D

Looking good mate, love the concept, good luck!

Ascovel 05-12-2010 05:11 PM

Looks really cool, and you're using my favorite adventure game engine, Sughly.

Also, having read a good number of your posts in these forums, I'm pretty sure it will be a honest adventure game for fans of the genre, and not some interactive movie. ;)

Sughly 05-14-2010 02:17 AM

Thanks again for the support everyone - hope I can live up to your expectations Ascovel :P

EDIT: There's a higher res of the pic here now. I've also started a blog over here, but there's not much there and won't be until June when I have more time to work on it again. But I'll update here too when any are made.

MoP 05-14-2010 02:11 PM

The premise sounds interesting, and the art direction is very compelling.
+1 anticipating follower ;)

Sughly 05-18-2010 09:16 PM

Some new concept art now up at Krams Design. A big thanks to J.H., MoP, and Ascovel for the support over there :P

This artwork is really nice, a pleasure to look at. Please keep it up! Just one thing - I'd like to see a little higher contrast (darker shadows) to really start to make the image 'pop'. For example get some deep red shadows on those curtains. But that may not be the style you're going for, no worries if so :)

No you're perfectly right, I've been thinking the same thing myself. I'm still new to colouring so I'm learning things every time I try it. Thanks for the support Hol - I'll let you know when I have something new up to see if it makes any difference :D.

Alrighty, big changes with a new room nearly finished (full res shot of the pic at kramsdesign.com).

I'm having to make a lot of adjustments to Anna's Room to help keep a cohesive style, as I'm preferring the one of this room. That being said, Anna's room will still be brighter and somewhat more sterile, but not as much I suppose as it is above. Hope you like! :P

EDIT: I also added a little concept art a while ago at my site, for those interested in that sort of thing too.

J.H 06-01-2010 05:45 AM

Something a little darker is always intriguing, great work mate keep it up.

Sughly 06-05-2010 10:42 PM

Alrighty, sorry for the numerous updates but I've been working hard and really appreciate the feedback. Here's the updated Anna's room with just about all the decor completed (click on it for full res).

There's a few inventory items that still need doing but it's basically done.

And thanks JH for your ongoing support as always :P

EDIT: please feel free to offer any opinion on how it's progressing so far - the feedback I've had from various people has been quite valuable!

J.H 06-06-2010 08:21 AM

No problem mate, I like the look of the game :D.

The room looks good but possibly still a little too colourful if it's meant to match the mood of the other room you showed us.
