Default Microsoft MPEG-4 V3: Windows Standard?

Hi,

I was wondering, does anyone know if the microsoft MPEG-4 V3 Codec is windows XP(and onwards)standard?
I found this(below), but I've no idea from this whether MPEG-4 V3 is included by default, or if it needs to be downloaded.

The sad thing is there are no 'standards' because capitalism breeds chaos (adherents call it the 'market place', but it's just a mess of unproductive chaos)... you can see clearly that there are no standards, rather utter chaos, by the list of codecs you have pasted above; that's a somewhat current list and it's nonetheless ridiculously long... and yet incomplete.

That being said, a MS codec is more 'standard' where a MS player living in a MS OS is concerned than all the other non-MS codecs. Just ask MS, they'll tell you.

As for what the question has to do with adventure games? I imagine it has to do with the fact that adventure games, as they pertain to this site, are computer (digital) adventure games and thus employ digital methods of animated and/or real video compression and decompression. The question seems entirely reasonable here. Are you suggesting otherwise?

I don't know, but a little Googling found this: A list of what codecs are included with Windows Media Player 9 and 10. The codecs included with XP SP2 should be on all XP systems. (But aren't in practice, since some people don't install the updates.) The codec you ask about is on the list.

Good thing you're not a mod, then.

Since the original poster is someone known to be involved in game development (from previous posts) this is almost certainly a query as to what standard codecs there are so their game can use a standard (as opposed to requiring the player to download new ones)

Admittedly they haven't explicitly stated this in their original post but, since the query doesn't breach any forum rules, it seems reasonable to give benefit of the doubt.

Standards are usually based on a group of private capitalist companies hashing out their differences. Innovation always comes from capitalism. I can't imagine a group of socialists coming up with anything new aside from some new tax scheme. Codecs change because they either get more efficient or have new features that everyone likes. That is a good thing for most of us.

I sincerely hope that was sarcasm.

No.

As of late 2005, MPEG has grown to include approximately 350 members per meeting from various industries, universities, and research institutions.
I suppose you could argue for the universities, since some of them are funded by socialist governments, but by and large private industry is doing the heavy lifting when it comes to standards, the research is mostly provided by people who actually make money rather than those who take it away from people and do "good" with it. Since the ISO is multinational and there tend to be more socialist countries, they have just as much to do with the numerous standards as capitalist countries do, however, the earlier standards weren't so much standards as the first things companies came up with to solve the problem as in Microsoft and Intel's standards. All the Mpeg 4 standards were voted on by socialist countries since I believe they are ISO. I don't consider the United States a capitalist country anyway, but I suppose it's more so than most European countries. Taking stake in banks and car companies is obviously socialism at it's worst. The social security system, which is government pension, is a ponzi scheme that's starting to collapse. Medicare is running out of funds. So we're quite the socialistic failures over here.

Oh, it is not.

You know nothing of socialism, you're only repeating the reactionary pablum you've been fed lately.

Of course the US is a capitalist country. So are all the others you (or those who put these 'thoughts' into your head) want
to pretend are socialist...

A socialist country would have real democracy wherein the society is actually run by the people. Not this mess we have now wherein the governing is done by an plutocratic oligarchy. Who do you think is 'taking stake' in banks and car companies? Me and you? Well you're wrong; it's the small group of people who have been running things all along... and they ain't and never have been socialists, my friend.

Best line up behind the folks you belong with and stop listening to and doing the bidding of the folks who have been misleading you since the day you were born.

Innovation and betterment does not spring from greed, it springs from natural curiosity and the satisfaction of achievement; progress does not spring from the promulgation of a dog-eat-dog mentality, it spring from fraternity, a broad social fraternity.

And, lastly, erudition does not spring from hate-radio and Fox-news viewer mailing lists.

As this is clearly no longer a discussion on video codecs and the original question was answered I'm closing this thread.

If anyone wishes to continue the politics debate then please start a thread in Chit-Chat.
