Default Stage! Development Blog

Okay, so Deirdra 'Squinky' Kiai (of AG forums, staff review and development diary fame) and I are working together on an 'interactive comicbook' adventure, and have started posting production blogs on the site where we eventually plan to release the 'game' online.

For those who didn't see it before when I mentioned it in the AG Forum Blog, here's the first installment:

Part One

Today, I posted a brief entry to give a slight progress report. Still have quite a ways to go, but we're moving right along.

Part Two

Deirdra will probably have some things to say about the development from her perspective when she gets back from her trip abroad.

I think I'm going to continue to use this thread to post update links, just to keep our friends in the loop, and so we have a convenient place to announce the release when it's finally ready. Deirdra is pushing for an October release. I hope I don't blow it.

I don't see why you call it an "adventure game" with quotation marks as though it's really not. Why is an interactive comic book any less an adventure game than interactive prose?

Well, so far, I'd say it's because the game is so story-oriented (say that five times fast and see if it doesn't make you think it's a pop song) that classic adventure gamers might not regard it as an adventure game, even though there are in fact some game-type mechanics under the hood. We're going to be working with Deirdra's affinity mechanics, along with a frustration meter.

As well, I'm planning on us putting in a bunch of goofy interactive stuff to keep the more static pages from being boring. However, there are no animations planned, and... there are no puzzles planned (there, I said it). I may stick in some goofy stuff involving puzzle play of some sort, but it won't be what we lovingly refer to as 'well integrated puzzles'. Probably just something silly like a goose chase of some sort. The main focus of Stage! is the dialogue, which Deirdra and I are well aware won't endear us to some AGers.

Still, we hope folks will have fun with it. It's a bit experimental, but it's mostly just for fun.

So yeah, I'm not sure if it's safe to classify it as an Adventure Game, so I'm being careful about abusing that appellation just yet. We'll see what it's like after this next round of scripting, which will be fleshing out the background details more, and may or may not involve integrating some more gameplay features... if Deirdra and I feel comfortable with them, and if Flash will support our ideas.
__________

Just wanted to add that there has been another short update to the development blog, found here.

You're only allowed to do that once you start posting entries longer than haiku length.

It's quantity not quality that counts with a blog... isn't it?

Fortunately, the Inquisitive Arts team possesses more than enough of both.

Haiku is the gift that keeps on giving. Headaches, mostly. But thank you.

Meanwhile...

New production blog over at the website, this time with images.

More Bloggy Goodness.

I missed the fact that Deirdra posted a blog here.

And I just made another post with images here.

Still not much polished graphic work to show, but we're getting there. Soon.
