Panoramic Adventures
Inspired by the recent Underground news about a Myst-style game developed with AGS:
From what I've heard about AGS before, it's an engine that requires a certain amount of programming knowledge. I'm wondering whether the code the game developer wrote so the engine would be capable of warping a picture (in order to create the illusion of immersion in a 3d environment) will be incorporated into AGS as a standard feature. And, more importantly, do you know of any other free adventure-development engines which have a user-friendly (i.e., gui-oriented) way of incorporating panoramic pictures? I've been interested in developing an experimental game with panoramic environments, but 3rd person character control.

The 4X Technologies's Phoenix VR engine for 360 degree panorama was cool (it was used in games like Amerzone and Dracula), but 4X Technologies has been defunct since early 2003.
You could try to develop using Macromedia Director, but it's not free. Last edited by Nautilus; 11-22-2006 at 07:26 PM. |

I only use 360 degrees for the outer space scenes. I tried using regular scenes but that meant the user could fly his space ship into the endless infinity and then say "sorry, I can't go any further" Which was just WRONG.

There are lots of AGS modules now for all kinds of things. The best place to look them up is http://americangirlscouts.org/agswiki/Category:Modules Also, if you go on the forums and say "I wonder if it would be possible to have a module to do X, then you may find someone will write one for you" |

Without that module, my game wouldn't even exist. It's people like SSH, SteveMcCrea, etc, on the AGS forums who make it easy for the rest of us to have these features in our games without the need for a lot of complicated scripting. For that, they have my thanks.
