Best Amateur Adventure Games?

My question is ... with all the overpriced and inferior AGs being put on the market, I want to try freeware adventure games, but obviously the quality of many amateur adventure games it lacking, so I want YOUR expert opinions ...

What are the best amateur adventure games out there? List your top ten (or less if there aren't ten worthy ones).

Just two rules. 1. Don't vote for remakes of Sierra or Lucas games (I already know about those). 2. Don't vote for your own game if you are a designer.

I thought about posting this in the Amateur Adventure section but I think that is more for announcements, development, etc.

the white chamber. Best freeware adventure game out there, IMO.

Other favorable mentions: Spooks, No-Action Jackson, Dead City, Apprentice I and II, 5 Days a Stranger.

Out of Order, Cirque de Zale, Frasse and the Peas of Kejick, Chick Chaser, Nathan's Second Chance, Spooks, and No-Action Jackson are some of my favourites. My all-time favourite amateur adventure has got to be Richard Longhurst and the Box that Ate Time, though. :D

Prodigal
The Family Treasure
Cedric and the Revolution
Enclosure
Du . . . oh, sorry.

1 - Emily Enough
2 - Pleurghburg
3 - Ben Jordan 3-5
4 - 5 Days a Stranger / 6 (?) Days a Skeptic
5 - Nick Bounty games (I think that's his name, been awhile since I've played those ones :x )

Squinky 10-11-2006 10:43 AM

Gyah! I forgot the Nick Bounty games! Yes, even despite the fact that the guy who made them sits right across from me at work and has all his Pinhead Games memorabilia on his desk...

Almost everything from Yahtzee is worth taking a look. His little somethings are usually amongst the few games I bother to finish. Started too darn many AGS games already. :D

Ah, "Knightsquire" was kinda cute for what it's worth, especially the music. Try that if you liked Coktel's Gobliiins games. I finished that a few weeks ago, thanks go out to SSH for his "pick of the month" nomination on the AGS page.

You're welcome.

A couple of personal favourites in no particular order:

The Apprentice games.
Out Of Order.
The Game That Takes Place on a Cruise Ship (and Cubert Badbone).
The Augmented Fourth (I voted for this one in the top 10 games thread, too).
Spooks.
The Nick Bounty games.

I can also 100% recommend some of the other games mentioned in this thread.

(There are also a couple of reviews on a site that I forget the name of... Something Gamers. Jungle Gamers? The logo is looks like jungle explorers a bit. Reminds me of Indiana Jones. :))

These are all really really good games:

Pleurghburg
5 days a Stranger / 7 days a Skeptic / Trilby's notes
Duty and Beyond
Ben Jordan series
Bestowers of Eternity

Don't think I've ever tried the Nick Bounty games, I'll give those a shot :D

I always had a fondness for the Hugo games.

When the "Revival of Monkey Island Project" game comes out, it's going to be one of the best. No doubt about it.

In recent years, most of the really good adventure games have been produced by independent studios. Some of them have even allowed there work to be distributed freely. My faves are...

These are in no particular order, just some very good free games out there!

Yep, Samorost 2 is one of my favorites. I would have listed it if it was freeware.

As well as many of those above I'd recommend Five Magical Amulets from Offstudio (and that's not just because my name appears in the credits) I was lucky to get on board with that one.

Check out the AG review

EDIT For further evidence of my ability to sneak my name into the credits of quite good games check out PMX in SSH's signature and Frasse and the Peas of Kejick in Trumgottist's signature.
