KAPTAIN BRAWE Beta Demo available

Hi all.

Just wanted to let you know that a public beta of Kaptain Brawe is available at:

http://brawe.adventuredevelopers.com/KB_Demo_Beta02.exe

and if that one doesn't work, Orange Brat uploaded it on:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=VQD4R084

This version still has some minor spelling bugs, which will be fixed this week. Beta testers confirmed that the build is stable, and that's why I am releasing it to a more wider audience, before putting a REAL demo on portals and download sites.

When you finish it, you'll notice that you can visit www.kaptainbrawe.com, but that page still doesn't exist. It will be up and running with the public demo released.

You can mail me or post ANY bugs that you find. Also, your comments are much appreciated.

Thanks for playing.

I have just one question. How does ROWBOAT go up a ladder? :P

Karmillo 05-14-2006 07:14 AM

I cant get the download working :frown:

EvilMulder 05-14-2006 07:46 AM

Is there no option to skip text? I read very quickly, and it's frustrating to wait every sentence.

Kaptain Brawe 05-14-2006 08:02 AM

Thanks for downloading.

If it's a cutsequence, you can skip everything with the ESC.

If you are playing, left mouse click skips the sentence.

Rowboat magicaly climbs with his hooks, but thats a secret.

I just downloaded it for the 3rd (or was it 4th?) time, and never ever had the slightest hitch.
I don't have full broadband, but ADSL, and it took 4½ minutes and plays perfectly.
Maybe your setup ??

I doubt that you read English quicker than I do?!
It's not the reading, but the absorption of what you read... the story, the humorous cracks, the hints, the details, etc.

Not everybody reads as fast as I (and apparently you) do... particularly some for whom English is not their 'mother-tongue'!
As a matter of fact, I personally recommended (more than once) exactly the opposite... i.e., slowing the speech-text down somewhat.

There's absolutely no problem about getting held up.
As posted above... anybody can click over every text at any time s(he) wants with no difficulty whatsoever!

There is nothing wrong with Karmillo's setup. The download did become unavailable earlier; I had to temporarily host the download so Karm could get it.

Dale, maybe people squashed Adventure Developers bandwidth. I should've consulted with Erwin, he might HATE me because of this. I haven't told him I'll release it.

Is there any way this could be hosted on Adventure Gamers?

I still don't have my own domain, nor the server for that matter.

Don't want to get anyone in trouble, worst case scenario, bring down the whole site =).

Is there a more elegant solution?

Thanks in advance.

Try http://www.yousendit.com/ or http://www.megaupload.com/ for a temp solution.

I would certainly not suggest to speed up the text. I am completely aware that many people read slower than me. It would just be nice to have an option to skip text during the movies as well. ;)

Kaptain Brawe 05-14-2006 02:35 PM

Thanks Orange Brat.

The only problem is that now I am away, and on a REALLY crummy connection, 56k modem, and it would be virtualy impossible for me to upload it soon. I have to wait for the weekend to do it, so if anyone is willing...=)

Evil Mulder
This could be done, the text skipping and stuff. Simply removing the condition that the cutscene is running. However, with that condition removed, the user could move the character around and make a mess out of a sequence.

On the other note, doing the option of adjusting the speed of text is impossible. This is engine limitation, since you have to put the number of seconds as a parameter at the end of each sentence. That would require typing the whole text again with shorter delays.

A problem, to say atleast.

I was enjoying the demo last night when WHAM my pc switched off. I was about to swear that the demo had knackered my computer when I realised the lights were off and so was everyone elses in the street.

So i'm blaming your demo on causing a power-cut within a two mile radius of someone playing it. (or it could have just been a blackout :D )

Was having great fun with the demo at the time. I love your graphical style.

Here's an alternate link that will last 30 days:

Kaptain Brawe 05-15-2006 05:35 AM

Thanks Orange,

However, I tried that link and the page is temporarily unavailable.

Oh well, this build wasn't intended for wider audience, so the next one will be better.

Lucien, thanks for the comments. And sorry about power shortage =). Kaptain's Ion Gun draws alot of power. Or myabe you re-routed the power with a wrong combination and blew the surrounding fuses?

the gnome 05-15-2006 06:14 AM

I've just started the download... Can't wait!!

the gnome 05-15-2006 06:37 AM

Seems great... I'll sure look into it... Blog it even...

I must be abnormally lucky!
I again just now downloaded it (at original above) in 4½ minutes!!:7

I'm very impressed with this demo. I'm currently making my own one using Visionaire, and I'll be a very happy guy indeed if it can reach the high level of quality of this one.

The few things that I didn't like were the 3D characters. I understand that it's the most efficient and convenient way to have animated characters, but handdrawn adds such charm and a feeling of 'craftsmanship' to a game. Now they felt a bit static and cold. But apart from that: the detailed backgrounds, the many visual tricks and treats (lighting especially), the bountiful interaction, the amusing setting and the nice puzzles, it was all great.

This is a big thumbs up, but I'm also kind of biased because I know now better than ever what an enormous job it is to build something like this.

You must be using up all the bandwidth or something :P

Lucien21 05-15-2006 10:31 AM

Managed to play it again without powercuts. (I tuned down the power on the ion pistol)

Loved the demo and the art style.

Only problem I had was I couldn't get the ensign to give me the schematics to the power switching box.

I probably picked up all the objects and did the transponder problem before I came to that bit, but he kept saying the same thing and I couldn't get him to help fix the translator.

What is the trigger to getting him to help as I must have missed it.

Look forward to the full release. Great fun.
