I think one of the good things about the self-made adventure game scene is that it allows a variety of different game styles. So in my opinion the next game should be something completely different.

How about Jessica Plunkenstein and the Dusseldorf Conspiracy? I haven't played it, but it's been getting good reviews (including on AGers).

For future playthroughs, I nominate the Ben Jordan series. All the (released) games as a whole add up to a reasonably lengthy game.

I'm interested in that one too, but, as I said, I probably won't be taking part in the next playthrough, so take no notice of my opinion.

In my opinion it's too similar to 5DAS to do right away. Besides, I'd rather do a game I haven't played next.

Finally, should we give it a week's rest perhaps? This whole business is quite time consuming.

Karmillo 02-03-2006 08:07 AM

yeah, but we should probably decide within that week wich game it will be :P

maybe give it more than a week though

Legolas813 02-03-2006 11:14 AM

Ah, I'm still not done with 5 Days. Haven't had time.

Fair comment. There is a nice variety out there.

I'd be fine with this. I downloaded it on the basis of the good review but haven't got around ot playing it yet. It would be good to playthrough on a game I haven't played before. Some of my comments on 5DAS stemmed from it being a replay.

A good series and well worth replaying. I think the cases have got better as the series has progressed. I tried to link to grundislav this morning and got a page not found error (I've been checking for Episode 5 on a regular basis) Anyone know what's up there?

After a brisk nap 02-04-2006 02:56 PM

I think grundislav is sick of people nagging him for BJ5, and is keeping a low profile.

I finally got around to finishing 5DAS. Wow! Day 5 is really short when you know what to do.

I think it has a nice mix of puzzles, too. I like the system of repeating a puzzle from earlier in the game, MI2-style. Though like Kurufinwe, putting together the DeFoe-detector was a bit of a hassle first time around. In my case, it was using the machete as a stick that I found illogical.

The ritual is a really cool little puzzle. Will probably take a couple of tries for most people to get correct, but that's OK since the death sequences are fun, and the hints are fair. Though I found it somewhat disturbing that Trilby kept stepping on the Welder's remains.

In this chapter, I really, really wish Yahtzee would have done something more with the dialogue. The conversation with Simone is ridiculous once you start solving the puzzles. "Where's the body?" you ask, right after you carried it through there into the trophy room.

An enjoyable payoff to an enjoyable game... though it still bugs me how that body got under the bathroom tiles. (In the commentary, Yahtzee only comments on the improbability that John DeFoe would have been able to crawl all the way up from the cellar and to the bathroom before dying. He doesn't mention the bigger problem of how he got in under the floor.)

The idol didn't bother me. I think it's dealt with to some extent in the sequel, but even if it wasn't, I don't feel like I need an explanation for exactly how it fits in. Yahtzee explains in the commentary that the car must have been brought there by the ghosts of the Welders' victims (either Roderick and Matthew or the people who have died in the house since) trying to help you. The other things I agree are problems.

In my opinion, almost everything that is wrong with this game could have been fixed without too much work. What it really needed was some good feedback from playtesters, doing something very much like we just did.

In the future, it would be interesting to do something like this with a game in beta, and see if we could actually improve the final version!

I didn't notice it this time, but it did bother me that he kept stepping on Sir Roderick and Matthew's bones in the basement. Really, disrespectful people like him deserve to have ghosts problems. ;)

Yes, that would be fun. :)

Don't do Ben Jordan next. I only played the first one, but it was really poor. It was about two minutes long, looked ugly and made very little sense.

Karmillo 02-05-2006 03:55 PM

How about 2 of a kind? i downloaded that but never got round to playing it

Yeah, the games improve rapidly in quality. That's part of what would make it an interesting series of games to play.

Hmmyeah. I like that game a lot, but from what I recall it doesn't have very natural breakpoints. I think most of it can be done in any order.

Karmillo 02-06-2006 03:00 AM

How about Cirqe de zale? thats another one i downloaded and never played :D

Can we save time here. You give us a list of all the Amateur games you've downloaded but never played and we'll pick likely candidates from that. :P

Karmillo 02-07-2006 02:01 PM

Well apart from KQ1 and 2 that would just about be it :P

I've not played either of those either but I have a thing about teh Sierra sudden death syndrome.

Did download them though. (the remakes that is) Might play them some time saving every 30 seconds (is that often enough? :P )

You never got around to the Hugo references Karmillo. I've been waiting.

Maybe a bit more often, you get killed in the second screen for touching a rock :shifty:

Ugh, I hope you would forget...ok its a slight stretch and i could get a bloody screenshot to show you in hugo but...

If your compare the kitchens...hugo's kitchen is a fliped version of 5days, and the left leads to a crypt like room in both of them and the right leads to the dining room :P

there are some more similareties but they arent as big as I remembered :frown:

Anyway, maybe we should try out one of these new or recently released games, im sure it just a matter of time before I download and not get round to playing them :D

After a brisk nap 02-08-2006 06:47 PM

Two new or recently released games that I'd quite like to play would be Prodigal and Soviet Unterzoegersdorf. They're both nominated for a few AGS Awards. Prodigal for Story, Backgrounds, Sound and Music, and Soviet for Story and Dialogue.
