Non-adventure game recommendations for adventure gamers
 

He he, I hope we can stay on topic so this thread doesn't get moved.

What non-adventure game title would you recommend to adventure gamers? why?

Half-Life 2 - To see the extent of how much the environment can affect gameplay and puzzles. Of course the game is not puzzle-laden but there are small easy puzzles like none in any adventure game because they are based on the physics engine or deformable environments. I dream of the day that I see an adventure taking a fresh approach to puzzles... or using the source engine for that matter. :D

Everquest 2 (or any good MMO) - Because playing a game w/ thousands of other live players is a real different experience then playing a single player game. You create friendships, take real pride in your character and accomplishments, and the game is ever evolving so there is always something to do. That, and I'm a fiending EQ2 addict.

Elder Scrolls -Morrowind -To see what how real a virtual world can feal. This game is masterfully crafted and it is so easy to loose yourself in all the intricate detail that was put into this massive world. Plus, I enjoyed the open ended-ness of the gameplay that let the player descide how they want to play. First time I played it, I made a mistake and couldn't continue the main story-line... didn't stop me from spending hours and hours continuing to play the game and having fun.

What other recommendations do you all have?

The usual : Beyond Good and Evil, Anachronox, Final Fantasy (7, 8, or 9... haven't played the most recent ones). And Flashback.

Shennmue series, if you can call it a non-adventure.

Thief series.
Half Life series.
No One Lives Forever series.
System Shock 2.
Clive Barker's Undying.
Populous: the Beginning.
Silent Hill series.

That's all I ca think of for now; they all have something in them that would appeal to adventure gamers I reckon.

Whoa, I need to replay this very soon. Wasn't able to finish it 10+ years ago on my Amiga. ;(

Ahhh, Flashback. I can still see Conrad Hart's jacket billowing out as he makes a sudden change of direction. That spent years at the very top of my favourite game list.

On topic (I'm trying bysmitty :P ):
Beyond Good and Evil - for the wonderful character development.
Thief series - for the story and atmosphere.
System Shock 1/2 - ditto.
Prince of Persia: Sands of Time - for making you think a bit (and for the character development and story).
and Flashback's predecessor, Another World - which was even more Adventurey than Flashback.
I'm also guessing Psychonauts is a contender but I'm yet to play it.

Psychonauts definitely, because it has the insanity... of a manatee.

Also, although personally I would consider all of these adventures:

Appeal's Outcast: lose yourself in a wonderful alien world, then save it. Lots of story and character, a good bit of action with a touch of stealth and the strangest means of transportation ever.

Little Big Adventure 1 & 2: wonderfully charming. Overthrowing an evil dictator has never been this much fun.

Deus Ex: fascinating futuristic dystopia.

Gothic 1 & 2: it feels more adventure than RPG. Interesting story and characters, wonderful exploration and general awesomeness.

Realms Of The Haunting too.

Oh, and Tetris.

I hear that. Screw the quests, let me explore.

ICO for the PS2 - amazing adv-like game but with waaaaaay too much wraith fighting. Gorgeous graphics, fantasy story, and tons of exploration. One of the most artistic games I've seen.

Morrowind was very intimidating to me - it was so huge, and there was so much to do, that as an adv gamer I was lost.

I actually do consider ICO an adventure.

The Splinter Cell series. Of course.

Oddworld.

Well, I've only played Munch's Oddessey on Xbox, but I agree - that's a good one.

Planescape: Torment. An RPG that practically is an adventure, with much of the fighting skippable and one of the best stories I've seen in a long while.

The first two are most like an adventure game.

It's kind of painful to go through the list of games being recommended as their sole purpose seem to be to mock me for being completely inept at playing action heavy games.

The games that I think would have loved but never finished becasue they were too hard:

System Shock 2
Half Life
Thief
Realms of the Haunting

Notice a trend? I need to get me some skillZ. I'm missing out on a lot of gaming goodness because I suck.

If your not easily offended then i suggest you check out Postal 2
you baisicly live through 5 days running errands for your wife but your free to do these which ever way you choose.

for example when getting the milk you can obey the law and wait in que to pay for it or you can make a run for it and have the shop keeper chase after you with a shotgun XD

or you could just forget the chores and hit random people with your shovel :D

Knights of the old Republic or any of the Zelda games.

Ico was fantastic as was LBA 1&2 (but they are real adventures anyway :P )
