It's like a "scratch and sniff" sticker, if you've ever seen one of those. (I'm dating myself. )
The paper is the same size as a CD insert, and has a grid of 9 boxes (like a tic-tac-toe board) with numbers 1-9 in them. I never bothered to scratch them. |

I suppose it's not included in the budget versions anymore, eh? A Rub'N'Smell mini-game sounds fun to me.

The toilet smell? A bit too authentic, then?

LSL 7 had a text parser and a particular verb (respresented by the smell no 7) comes into play at one point

You may find this educational:
http://entertainment.howstuffworks.com/question274.htm I still see Scratch-and-Sniff stuff in stores. Take a look at those Glade products (the room deodorizor stuff) and you'll find that a lot of them have fragrance samples done that way. |

The inclusion of a scratch-and-sniff card was originally done by Steve Meretzky for his "Leather Goddesses of Phobos" text adventure for Infocom. Way cool.
Scratch-and-sniffs are made by microencapsulating the scent inside (microscopic!) plastic bubbles that burst when scratched. No reason they shouldn't smell even years later. I have scratch-and-sniff books dating back about 20 years (such as the hilarious "Ultimate Executive Lunch" by "Thymus Munney") and I just tested one now. The scratch-and-sniff parts still work wonderfully. --Josh |

I used to have collection of scratch-and-sniff stickers a long time ago. My favorites were the ones that smelled like chocolate. There was also one that smelled like pickles. I guess that one would be my second favorite.
As for the LSL7 sniff card, about half of them smelled exactly alike to me, so while it was still kinda neat, it wasn't what I'd call a selling point for the game.

I don't have any special memories of number seven. They were all equally repulsive.

I think one smelled like chocolate, and it was good. The rest smelled equally gross.

The last time I used a Scratch & Sniff card the most pungent smell had overpowered the whole card and you could barely smell things like the chocolate or Annette Boning's perfume. Lucky I've got about four of the things from buying various Collection Series.

Last time I checked, which was probably 2-6 months ago, my Scratch n Sniff card from Larry 7 still smelled. I bought it when it first came out. Well, actually, I gave my dad the money and got him to buy it, as the clerk wouldn't sell it to me, as I was pretty young at the time.
..My dad knew exactly what I was buying though. He was the one who introduced me to the Sierra adventures at the tender age of 1 on our old Apple IIgs. Anyway yeah, it was a neat trick, one that made the game the smallest bit funnier, though it was already pretty great.

I do admire Larry 7's willingness to use every silly gimmick the designers could think of to make the game more fun. Scratch-n-sniff, the ability to read for one of the voice acting parts in the game, add your own photo, the "Where's dildo?" game, the optional parser... None of it is necessary, but it all showed how the game was going that extra mile.
