Default "Playing Catch-Up: Steve Purcell" at Gamasutra

http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/new...php?story=6021

Quote:
Regarding the recent kerfuffle over a new Sam & Max title in development at LucasArts but subsequently cancelled, Purcell is relatively sanguine: "While at Pixar I was consulting on Sam & Max 2 after hours. I got word that it was cancelled from the team but the subsequent fan backlash was an unexpected side effect. Thirty thousand people signed the online petition protesting the decision. I had no idea there had been that level of anticipation for the game."

Finally, Steve concludes his comments with equivocation about whether his involvement in the game industry is completely behind him: "Would I get back into games? Sure. The [Sam & Max] license is back in in my hands now so we'll see what happens in the near future. In the meantime, when I'm not working at Pixar, I'm exploring other bizarre concepts, doing some painting, and cobbling together material for my website which will be called Spudvision.com."

Where is bad brain anyway these days. I really haven't heard much about them, although I'm supposedly on their news list.

Our own Roderick "Flux" Leermakers has been working at Bad Brain for two months as a kind of trainee I guess.

So maybe he can tell something?

Didn't Steve Purcell always have the license to Sam & Max? He's the creator..

Yep, he had only given LucasArts the rights to make a game based on Sam&Max. Otherwise the rights were his.

It's been known since a few weeks after the game got cancelled that the license would revert back to Steve Purcell in May of this year. LucasArts still permanently holds the rights to all the art, writing, sound, programming, etc done specifically for their Sam & Max game though so nobody can have that stuff unless LucasArts decides to give or sell it to them - in other words a new Sam & Max game would have to be started from scratch.

I'm sure whenever something comes along that makes sense to do with Sam & Max, Purcell will do it. I doubt that means a game will go flying into production right off though. Telltale is busy, LucasArts is out of the question, etc etc. I hope we see a new Sam & Max comic before anything else... Purcell has a new issue of the comic that he's been sitting on half finished for like a decade!

It's already been posted about a few days ago.

Maybe Valve should get the licence next?
