Myst-Style Games
I've been eyeing quite a bit of games that I've been told are Myst-style. Games that are heavy on complex puzzles. The thing is, I don't like these type of games. I want to know if anybody has played these games and tell me if they are complex puzzle games.
Alida Amber: Journeys Beyond Cameron Files: Pharo's Curce Aura: Fate of the Ages Chemicus: Journey to the Other Side COMER Connections Dark Fall series Drowned God The Forgotten: It Begins Harvest Jerusalem: The 3 Roads to the Holy Land Martian Chronicles Nightfall Pilgrim: Faith as a Weapon Qin: Tomb of the Middle Kingdom Remedy Salammbo: Battle for Carthage Sentinel: Descendants in Time TimeScape: Journey to Pompeii Titanic: Adventure Out Of Time Welcome to the Future |
Of the ones I've played on your list:
Amber, Dark Fall 1 and 2 - spooky games. Some inventory puzzles. 1st person exploration and reading/looking for clues. Lots of puzzles. Aura, Comer, Drowned God, Harvest - lots of puzzles. Almost no inventory. The Forgotten - the first in a series that never took off. Ist person exploration, with some inventory. Chemicus - 1st person educational game with tons of inventory. Lots of exploration and experimentation. Good fun if you enjoy chemistry. |
Tahnks. I think I will play Amber, the Dark Falls and the Forgotton.

The Forgotten
you'll love this game I have played it 4 yrs ago, and never forgot it. Am waiting patiently for part 2.
Enjoy, RevelRat |
"Welcome To The Future" is all puzzles, with no discernable storyline that I could find. It has major maze that has to be mapped, so if you hate mazes, avoid it.

Not a fan of First person games
Personnally I dont' like many first person games because often they lack interaction with other characters however I have played and own Titanic:Adventure out of time.
Game wise, its ok, you get to interact with people, so some dialogue puzzles, inventory puzzles, and a couple what I call puzzle puzzles, theres a weird combination thing at one point, but there isn't alot of those, its pretty general puzzle wise, Everything else however I did not like AT ALL. For one I was totally creeped out by the music, massivly creeped out. Second the graphics aren't great, when you speak to people there you see a still photo of them with their mouth moving, and although some of the environment is really pretty again alot of it i found creepy, especially as you go exploring through the lower areas. Writing this has also brought back memories of one of the cutscenes that thouroughly creeped me out. Reminds me a bit of some of the cutscenes I seen so far in Black Mirror, but Black Mirror creeps me out alot less than Titanic adventure out of Time. But then again I find I'm a bit of a wuss and get creeped out fairly easily, but then again I luv CSI and stuff and that doesn't creep me out or anything. But yes in my opinion really really really really creepy, and theres liek 3 diff endings, only one being the ideal ending, but I don't think I ever got to that ending, after getting some of the others I had enough. So thats Titanic Adventure out of Time, General 1st person adventure that has really creepy music and is just creepy in general. |

Amber: Journeys Beyond - ghost story Cameron Files: Pharo's Curce Aura: Fate of the Ages Chemicus: Journey to the Other Side - difficult game even if you know chemistry - you have to mix things without knowing why COMER Connections Dark Fall series - not really related games by indie Jonathan Boakes - very well done scary game in Dark Fall, Light's Out is more sci-fi Drowned God - very strange Myst-like game, kinda fun though - tough puzzles The Forgotten: It Begins Harvest - indie game by Michael B Clark - mediocre Jerusalem: The 3 Roads to the Holy Land Martian Chronicles Nightfall Pilgrim: Faith as a Weapon Qin: Tomb of the Middle Kingdom Remedy Salammbo: Battle for Carthage - difficult semi-historical game, maze like areas, timed ending Sentinel: Descendants in Time TimeScape: Journey to Pompeii Titanic: Adventure Out Of Time Welcome to the Future FGM-Lyn |

Aura: Fate of the Ages - Puzzle game, but with an inventory, and not that complex Dark Fall series - Half a puzzle game (quite easy), half an inventory game. Sentinel: Descendants in Time - Complex puzzle game |
Amber: Journeys Beyond --> Recommended. Primary influence in the Dark Fall games, and one of the few really scary games that there are out there. Good surrealistic story, obscure puzzles.
Aura: Fate of the Ages--> a bit boring. More related to 7th guest than Myst. Connections---> educational game. Just amusing, reminds me "Safecracker" a lot. Again, more related to 7th guest. Dark Fall series ---> not very complex, not that simple, but good games. Creepy and well designed. Drowned God --> buggy! Salammbo: Battle for Carthage ---> the last game under the name of Cryo, and one of their best. Many sub-games. Welcome to the Future ---> surrealistic to the point of being absurd. |
Of the ones you mentioned, I think Amber, Comer, and Qin come close to being close to Myst, i.e., very little actual story, mostly solving puzzles, little or no manipulation of inventory, although Amber had a little of that. Not mentioned are the two Shivers games, which are self-described Myst clones.

If any of you like Amber, play lighthouse by seirra.
It is even more creepy than amber it's about a portal to another dimension. it's a puzzle game and an inventory game which is even better. It's one of my favorites. It completely blows most of these out of the water. also, to the person who played the titanic game on here.. did you ever wonder why the city your in explodes at the beginning of the game.. well, that's actually historically accurate. that was the halifax explosion. I thought it was pretty cool how they included such an important part of the titanic's time line when they really didn't have to. other than that, the game had a lot of buggy problems. keep adding to this list guys. I need more puzzle games to play. apparently rhem is really good but I have yet to play it |
Yaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!
Zombie thread. Where my shotgun? |
*hands over rifle and ammo*

I see nothing wrong with recycling old threads, fits the retro trend perfectly. :P It's nice to read well-known regulars again too. Ninth! Come back!
|
Here's the sad part, since this thread was active, there is precious little that's come available for those of us who enjoy these games.
Rhem 1-4 Outcry Slip Space I just finished Rhem 4 and am looking at replaying some of my older games. I'm playing Milo on my Win95. |

Another game I understand is "Myst-like" is Amerzone, designed by Benoit Sokal... and apparently it takes place in the same universe as the Syberia games (?).
Haven't tried it yet but found out about it when I discovered it was included in this Syberia collection I bought, going to be interesting to check out. |

The only two I have played from this list is
Dark Fall: Lights out - not bad Aura: Fate of the Ages - which I quite enjoyed. |
