Black Mirror - nasty DRM? Any other versions out there?
Working through my enormous backlog of adventure games. I have all 3 Black Mirrors, including the first in a Jewel Case format. I seem to remember it has some nasty DRM, that Star-whatever that seemed to mess up some people's machines or drives.
Curious if that is the case, should I care, or is there any versions of Black Mirror out there that are "safer" ? Putting this on an XP machine I just put together, freshly installed, so I'd hate to put a bunch of awful stuff on it already. Thanks for any help! |
Yikes, sorry I probably should have put this in the Black Mirror thread that was just down the front page. In my defense I didnt think there would be in a million years a current thread about the Black Mirror :)

A new thread was fine as the "Let's play" thread includes huge spoilers :).
I am actually interested in Black Mirror versions too. I have 2&3 but I really would like to own the first title also. Go at least click it to wishlist in GoG :). The game was also available from Gamespot if you signed to some test crew, how was it? Someone here should know. |
I have the UK dvd-case release of BM1. AVG picks up the game .exe file as a virus, and if you run it anyway it won't recognise the disc. Only way I got it to play was to get a no-cd patch.
So...not the most impressive start for the game. But it really is worth persisting. BM1 is one of my favourite games. |
Check Gamersgate maybe:
http://www.gamersgate.com/DD-BLMI/black-mirror Page says: Platform: PC File size:1332.84 MB Categories:Action, Adventure, Point-and-Click Publisher:Nordic Games DRM: DRM Free -------------!!! Version:1.0 PS: i dont know if drm free talk is true, its just says so. |

if you have a 64-bit OS, you might be ok since early versions of Starforce wouldn't install on x64. It wasn't until 2005 that they made a 64-bit compatible version and the first Black Mirror was released in 2003.
Otherwise, you could install the game, and then immediately remove the starforce protection using the removal tool here: http://onlinesecurity-on.com/downloads/sfcdrvrem.zip or here: http://www.star-force.com/support/sfdrvrem.zip and then use a nocd crack to enable the game to play without starforce, available at www.gamecopyworld.com apologies mods if any of those links are frowned upon |

If we talk about BUYING, then I cant see anywhere NA only and I'm in Europe. As a matter of fact - the current publisher is Nordic Games (I believe they have a deal with dtp) and their home market is Scandinavia and Europe. The game is not listed in gamersgate.CO.UK site though, but maybe there is a workaround by forcefully working in .com environment. marcd2011 suggestions are valid, I can back those up. But yeah, mods may not like one of those links... |

The discussion was on the discount thread and the game is one of the Void slot games. This void thing then again is not available for anyone anywhere. Not to me at least. |
Ok, strange. Appearantly it is region-locked (oh why cant more digital distributors be more like gog). It is from Norway. It is not in UK and Finland. Right now I' moving around and in coming weeks I could check would it be available behind Danish, Swedish, Hungarian etc. IPs. But I doubt it would place very high on my priority list, so...
Phod - u just have to try. :) |
Any recommendation to grab an English copy with out star force from anywhere ????
