Off the top of my head:
Blade Runner if you're into sci-fi.
Discworld Noir, L.A. Noire, The Dame Was Loaded if you're into noir.
Tex Murphy games if you're into sci-fi/noir.

You can also look in the recommendations thread that's sticky on the forum.
It links to a thread with who-done-it games, crime/sleuth games and detective/noir games...

My favourite detective game is Still Life. If you haven't played it, you're in for a good time. And some difficult puzzles.
If you check the recommendations thread, a sticky here in the adventure section, you'll find plenty of info there.

EDIT: Sorry for repeating what Tim just said. We were writing at the same time.

I second Still Life even though the ending's kinda lousy

I'd also recommend The Last Express a historical detective adventure completely set on the Orient Express at the dawn of WWI. It's real time which makes for very original and interesting gameplay though it does take some getting used to because with every move you make you will see or hear things but at the same time miss something else taking place somewhere else so you'll probably get stuck or die about 50 times because you missed a crucial event simply because you weren't there at the time it happened. Though the game is very redeeming in a sense because it has different timesegments and if you got stuck you can start a segment over again and see what you missed the first time without having to play the whole game over again.

You could also try Overclocked. It's not really a detective adventure. More of a psychological thriller but it has some whodunnit elements and it's a really, really good game imo. Dark, immersive, moving, thought provoking. Though some gamers were put off by the fact it's a little thin on the gameplay side. There's still quite a lot to do though. It's not a visual novel. Not by a long stretch.

I can recommend many of the already mentioned games:

Discworld Noir, Tex Murphy (FMV trilogy), Still Life (and "prequel" Post Mortem), Hotel Dusk + Last Window at least.

There's a few games I haven't played yet so might check them out myself.

- Spycraft. Great fun and ahead of its time.

- Make sure to play older Sherlock Holmes games as well - The Serrated Scalpel and The Rose Tattoo - there're some gameplay issues especially with the Rose Tattoo, but both have pretty deep narratives.

- If you're fan of Agatha Christie, there're Poirot games and And Then There Were None; Cruise for a Corpse is oldie but very much Agatha-esque.

- Out of FMV glory - Ripper and Black Dahlia
